I say yes. Dooley never won a 1 vs 2 national title game. Kirby has.

Take Herschel away from Dooley he is a 8 win a year coach.

Mark Richt is not in the conversation.

if youre saying this, then you need to have Richt in the conversation. The guy was a yearly 9 or 10 game winner.

Dooley won 200 games and a national championship. Also played for another one vs Penn State in 1982. So yea, he played for 2 of them and won 1, just like Kirby has. Doesn’t matter about Herschel making Dooley a winner…Take away Jameis Winston and Jimbo Fisher is selling used cars in Slingshit, Texas.

Jimbo can forfeit bowl games with the best of 'em also.

If the playoff system existed for Richt, he'd probably have 1, 2, maybe 3 NC's.

There's no question. Dooley will always have his place, but he can't hold Kirby's jock in terms of performance, certainly not at the same point in both men's careers. Unless Kirby were to fall off a cliff in that regard, I don't see how he doesn't finish out as THE greatest HC in Georgia history.

Give Kirby another 15 years and if he continues his success (and he might) then we can revisit this conversation.

As of right now, Dooley is still the best coach in UGA history (for me at least).

Not in his first six years. It's not like Kirby isn't likely to surpass that mark.

If Kirby sustains anything like the past 5 years for another 5 or so years, he will be the greatest coach in UGA history by a decent margin.

Yes but to counter that, CKS has 1 SEC and 1 Natty in 6 seasons. He has played for 4 SECs and 2 Nattys already in that time span. In the last 5 years, we have never finished out of the top 8. Took CVD 17 seasons to win the Natty with only 3 SEC Championships prior to the 3 he wins during his glory years of the early '80s.

So I'll settle for CVD being 1A right now and CKS being 1B. If Kirby continues to achieve at a high level he will be #1 soon. 200 wins, 6 SEC titles, 1 Natty be damned.

Can’t win a national title without winning the national title game

Did OP edit his post. I was going off him saying Dooley never played for a championship. Maybe I misread him.

obviously I see now the years that he did, but I was assuming he didnt.
