Did OP edit his post. I was going off him saying Dooley never played for a championship. Maybe I misread him.
obviously I see now the years that he did, but I was assuming he didnt.
Forgive him, he is kind of retarded

I say yes. Dooley never won a 1 vs 2 national title game. Kirby has.
This has nothing to do with which is best.
But the answer is yes to your question. Much better.

Mark Richt is not in the conversation.
Mark Richt was better than Dooley, too.

Much easier era to win a SECC with Dooley.Only 6 or 7 conference games,no conference championship game and you could tie for conference crown.
He had 3 "gimme" wins every year in conference play (Vandy,OM,UK) and while UF and AU were good they still only shared 1 conference title in Dooley's first 20 years and he also left multiple conference championships on the table by losing to Auburn (who he had a losing record against)
Dooley woulda been gone in today's world after his '73 or '74 seasons.
I'd put him 3rd behind Richt and if Wally Butts had been half the coach he was after his 1st 10 years ( won the Rose,Sugar & Orange bowls) I'd put Dooley 4th

1980 was not a national title game.
Are you saying if we had lost that game we would have still won the title?

He did. Dooley certainly played for two and even in 1980, Georgia and Notre Dame were 1 and 2 heading into it. I guess if you consider Dooley's tenure, he's still going to be regarded as the "greatest," but I have no doubt Kirby will eclipse his standing in due time. Kirbs will have a statue one day, too.

Nope but they were actually 1 and 2
when the Sugar Bowl invited them but then they proceeded to lose to USC their last game and dropped in the polls.
Another reason why the old bowl system didn't work.

Richt completely turned Georgia around. I give Richt an amazing amount of credit. I also give the UGA administration an amazing amount of credit for making the move at the perfect time to fire a coach that averaged 10 wins a season to get the coach they thought could take us that final step to a national championship.
It was a big risk, and it paid off. Not many, if any, universities have made a move like that that actually worked.

Kirby will end up being the better of the two. Saban leaving in the next couple years only helps.

I'm with you... I think Richt rebuilt UGA into an upper tier program after a bad run in the late 80's through the 90's. He came in hot and picked up a couple of SEC titles, and missed a couple chances at NC by the skin of his teeth. But averaging 10 wins a year was solid and made for passing the torch to Kirby hard, but a great move. I'm ranking Kirby 1, Dooley 2, and Richt is 3, only because he didn't get that NC...but he was a damn good coach.

Vince Dooley also turned Georgia around when he came in 1964. Three awful years under Johnny Griffith and the last dozen years under Butts were not good.
Dooley won two SEC titles in his first five years, and finished in the top 10 AP rankings twice.
First person I met when I walked into the Georgia athletic department on August 25, 1964 was Vince Dooley.
