Yes.

You need competent coaches who can recruit their asses off by selling the school, the facilities, tradition, their ability to develop players/men, and then maybe, lastly, fan support.

Depends on how much money they "donate" to get players.

But seriously, if the players don't see the fans supporting them it hurts their excitement about playing and their confidence. Those things are right behind talent on what separates good from average players. You can take the most talented player in the world and if he isn't into the game and confident then he isn't going to do much.

Home field advantage is incredibly overrated, but fan support can at least help with recruiting.

The money matters more than anything.

The SEC Network is creating enough wealth to elevate the level of many SEC programs as far as facilities and coaching salaries.

History to an 18 year old is what happened in the last few years. It certainly does not hurt to have a historically good program, but I think we may see more teams rise to a higher level in the SEC on a more consistent basis.

Or maybe the big 6 will win the next 25 straight championships.

Time will tell, but I think USC and A&M are committed to putting a winning team on the field and each has the fan support to drive the revenue through the roof.

I'm impressed with USC fanbase. They stick with the Cocks even in tough times. Those Cocks just keep thrusting toward an SEC football championship.

I think the Cocks would penetrate A&M's defense in the SECCG if it were to happen.

There are a lot of hidden truths. No one has figured out the identity of the Zodiac Killer, D.B. Cooper, or who has Rembrandt’s Storm on the Sea of Galilee.

As for fan support, it is important to be in the top 10-20 programs in terms of exposure, facilities, paying coaches, etc. - all of which fans influence. Beyond that, it’s nearly all about the HC and how well he can fill out a staff, recruit and develop players, and have the leadership to keep the program on the road. And getting the right coach has as much to do with timing as anything else.

Is fan disappointment or apathy overrated?

I think pissed off fans have led to the firing of coaches and athletic directors. Look at how Tennessee influenced their coaching search.

If fans can impact decisions then you have to say that fan support is important.

You will always have the outlier schools like Miami football or Florida baseball where they are located in a hotbed of talent and can sell location but most schools are going to have to use fan support in a pitch some sort of way to get recruits.

Ask Phil Fulmer if fan support is overrated.

I think it definitely can matter. Kirby getting 93k into Sanford for his first G-Day (Spring) game, was a huge deal and had a very positive impact on recruiting. It doesn't always matter, but a lot of players like seeing a fan base unite behind their team.

I legitimately think our fans helped out UGA a ton last year. Especially in the ND game.

No ... not if you're talking about paying fans who actually contribute financially and in other positive ways.

Yes ... if you're talking about butt-chugging rock-painting bandwagon bitching and moaning fans who think they are entitled to greatness.

There are 2 things

Fan support is vital as this is who pays the bills. More tickets sold, more merchandise equals more money that can be used to pay top coaches and recruit anyone, anywhere with private planes that can fly to local airstrips vs commercial thereby visiting 10 kids a day vs 2.

Having the fan base and administration headed in the same direction is a recipe for success. When Bama hired Saban, Ozzie Newsome said everybody's on the same page now and the Bama machine will be reborn. For the first time since Bryant we have a coach that every single Bama person is solidly behind. Win or lose, he's our guy. That just breeds success.

Yes, it's important u have the fans but u need the administration too. Not giving it lip service but providing whatever that coach needs and letting him coach how he sees fit and not interfering.
