I believe he struggles with addiction, but he's the one who decided to buy a $2500 jacket, hop in a car, and enter the bar. He could've just gone to mom and dads house for a while/family vacation with those close to him so he wouldn't give in.

No, he didn't choose to buy that jacket, hop in a car, and enter the bar. The disease he has chose to do that, not Johnny.
Does a person with melanoma choose to let death spread over their skin like ivy or does the disease just do it?

Addiction is not a disease and not genetic and has never been proven to be either. Calling it a disease or genetic is just a crutch for pussies and the weak minded.
