Some who once argued that “they are already getting paid with a scholarship” are now arguing “they shouldn’t be paid, the scholarship is enough.”

It’s contradictory, no? The term “payment” seems fluid for them depending on the timeline.

they should be given whatever someone wants to give them.

Can you pay for food or clothes with a scholarship?

Sure, a scholarship can include meal vouchers but that’s incredibly limiting.

I think you are mistaken on their meals. P-5 football players eat dang good. Meals are usually planned by nutritionists.

Would you accept a scholarship in lieu of your salary?

It's a benefit.

A scholarship is effectively enabling athletes to work for free, instead of having to pay to do so.

When I was in college? Hell yes. I worked my way through school. If I had a scholarship pay tuition, room and board, I wouldn't have had to work.

Football players also get a monthly stipend in addition to tuition, room and board.

Would you accept a menial minimum wage job in lieu of the opportunity to get a free college education, free food, insurance, and free athletic training not to mention better job opportunities.

I’m aware. But that doesn’t cover the entire year. And it lacks choice. Sure it’s the food that’s the best for you when it comes to development for football…..but you aren’t given a choice.

No because most football players don't value a scholarship or an education. They just go play college football because they have to do that first to go pro.

Just think of how many football players would skip college and go straight to the NFL if it were allowed.....

Had someone told me when I was a college student I could have

tuition paid in full
Housing provided for free
Eating the best food on my personalized plan designed by a nutritionist.
Access to a tutor at any time
The best medical care 24 hours a day at no cost
No co pay
No insurance premiums
Free medication
All the clothes I will ever need handed out like candy from Nike.

Hell yes I take that.

Depends how broke you are on the NIL scene really.

The schools that don't have NIL juice or benefited more under the old system (aka paying players under the table) would love to claim the scholarship IS payment

I think he’s asking within the context of before NIL.

I would argue that its part of their compensation package. You could give them the cash, but then you might have to kick some athletes out for not paying their fee bill.

Well... If I could get the equivalent of a full ride (free rent, free food as well as free education) and knew I'd also get some significant amount of actual money from endorsement (NIL) deals, I probably would have taken that the first 5 years or so of my working life. Hell, if the NIL money were big enough I might still take it now.
