Reminded me of the early '90s, when college basketball was part of popular culture and not just a seasonal sport.

Iowa/South Carolina was a perfect combination of ebony vs. ivory and great white hope, a lot like Michigan/Duke from the early 90s.

It's hard for anyone under 40 to understand how much cultural significance there was with Duke and Michigan. That's back when white people were more likely to be freaked out by black people (more shock value), and Michigan freaked a lot of white people out. Then you had Duke and Christian Laettner couldn't have looked anymore like the perfect preppy doosh Duke player.

I think that the Iowa/South Carolina game had some of those same qualities, but I also think that it was a perfect storm.

Something like that might not happen for another 30 years. Players in the men's game don't stay in the same place long enough to learn who they are and it's hard to become a household name if you're literally on campus for 8 months before jumping to the NBA.

I wish you wouldn't post again for another 30 years.

Tell me I’m not the only one who misread this title at first?

I'm sorry that your favorite school is a basketball school and men's college basketball has been dying a slow death for the last 25 years.

It's still by far the second biggest college sport and the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is the best tournament by far. The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament blows away the College Football Playoff in terms of anticipation and excitement.

Plus with the way society is going basketball will still be played long after tackle football is probably banned. Heck more and more states are outright banning tackle football at the youth level. I hate it but within 10 years at least 1 state will most likely ban tackle football at the high school level, only allowing it for college and pros.

I know that this time of year is the time to shine for basketball nerds on here, but at least offer some context. Twice as many people watched the last CFP championship game than the last Final Four final. March Madness is something like 65 games and the CFP is 3.

The idea that NCAA men's basketball is most anticipated tournament compared to college football playoff might of been true but the 12 team football playoff this year will be by far the most anticipated playoff of this century..

Hate to burst the OP's precious bubble, but most of the white country was rooting against Puke back then, regardless of the other team's color. They were just too easy to hate. Oh, and it was a seasonal sport then, too. Are you like 20-something?

I agree. At least 3 guys played significant minutes in what used to be a game played only by women.
