become its own league?

Let's say the SEC somehow decided it wanted to break away from the NCAA and become its own league. In order to do so, it decides it wants to add 6 schools to make it a 20 school league. The 6 teams would be:
TCU
Oklahoma St
Clemson
North Carolina
Duke
Florida St

This league would only include the following sports.
Football
Men's Basketball
Women's Basketball
Softball
Baseball

So in theory, if the SEC would become its own league made up of the schools that already exist plus the six I mentioned above and would only include the five sports I listed, could it support itself? Or would it be more successful than the NCAA that would include all the teams that are currently a part of the NCAA minus the 20 schools that would make up the SEC?

Who would run the compliance? Or would it just be a free for all?

Since it would be its own league, it would have to establish the appropriate departments.

I was just thinking of a few teams that would actually be in the west region.

Title IX would end this before you could even try it. You would need about 5 or 6 more womens scholarship sports.

Back in the late 70's the major football schools led by Coach Bryant and others formed the College Football Association as a response to NCAA bullheadedness and greed. When the CFA negotiated a TV contract without the NCAA the NCAA sued and lost. That led to each conference being able to contract their own TV contracts.

Because teams don't just call each other up and say, "Hey, let's play." Part of the NCAA's job -- and purpose -- is to provide a unifying system under which all member institutions can play each other. If a 20 team league broke off, the odds are really, really good that, at least for the foreseeable future, none of the remaining NCAA teams would schedule one of the breakaway teams, and vice versa. So you'd have the same 20 teams playing every single year with no chance of any variety. That means rent-a-wins, bowl games, inter-conference one-shots, inter-conference home-and-homes, etc, would all be off the table for until negotiations were held. Given the amount of hurt feelings that would likely ensue from such a split, the odds are such a negotiation would take years, if not decades.

I am surprised there hasn't been an attempt to do something like this again. The NCAA honestly has to govern over more than they actually have the manpower to govern.

The SEC is the only conference that has its own network broadcasted nationwide, every SEC football team is guaranteed to be on TV every week, same thing applies to men's basketball.. I think. There could be an 8 team playoff, that would be 7 postseason games, each game could be someone like a bowl game, but they would only be held within the region. With that said, I know that would be where it would take its biggest financial hit.. Not having 11-12 teams in a bowl game, but just think about basketball season.

By adding a Duke and North Carolina it would increase the value of SEC basketball as a whole. Again, this is all "in theory".

NCAA has gone through many changes

Started in early 1900's by Dr Dudley (Vanderbilt) and others to address needed changes in sports because of deaths and gambling interests

Taken over by Byers (dictator) and run for the primary benefit of the Big 10 from the early 1950's to the late 1970's (about 30 years)

CFA formed to revolt against Big 10 and PAC 8 monopoly of money and broadcast rights. Oklahoma and Georgia sued and won which meant the schools, not the NCAA, now controlled the media

Once the CFA busted up football, NCAA focused on money grubbing the NCAA tournament and ruining a good system for expansion and money grubbing while leading to the exclusion of the actual fans

NCAA has gotten too bloated, needs to be disbanded and a new NCAA formed from governmental action (the US president was the leader in forming the NCAA in tyne first place) and get back to a system advocating the students and the fans instead of the media folks and the fat cats.

Correct, Title IX is a governmental regulation not a NCAA regulation. If you have been following the Baylor rape scandal, they were able to cover up for years until the federal government came in and forced oped a door the Baylor faithful wanted to remain tightly shut.

In that case, I think Title IX would be too much of a cash drain to make breaking off from the NCAA economically viable. Those TV $'s too.
