They both were bad men who did not play by the rules.

Seem similar to me. If you know more, enlighten me. I may be an old dog but I can learn new tricks.

Tennessee would be weak choice.

We are talking about SEC fans. I don't think Tennessee is in the SEC any more. I never see them in the playoffs or on TV. They may not even field a football team any longer. Perhaps they FINALLY decided to focus on academics.

We may as I know my grandparents lived shortly in Arkansas where some of my grandmother's family was living before moving back to ETN where my father's family have been since the 1780s.

Now you are talking about my family

If you have kin in the Tri Cities from before WW II odds are VERY good you are related. For the first 100 to 200 years of US history folks in the area got a spouse from less than 25 miles away and many never got past 5 miles.

It's contextual for the time periods, motivations, ends, ways, and means. One political and the other ideological.

Brutality of warfare and no quarter was not an uncommon for the time of the 18th and 19th century. Santa Anna viewed himself in the light of Napoleon and sought to regain control of a rebellious territory in order to gain political clout. He decreed all foreigners under arms on Mexican soil be treated as pirates and executed. He carried that out at Goliad and the Alamo with hope the tactics would dissuade the Texans from continuing to rebel and prevent further "illegal immigration." In the end, he was a strong man dictator and a poor statesman that did more to contribute to the instability of the Mexican government than to help it. Mexico had like 30+ heads of state between 1830s and 1850s. He couldn't even capitalize on the few moments of success his army had in the Mexican American War for having to return to Mexico city to quell another coup. Scott couldn't even force the Mexicans to sue for peace when he captured Mexico City because of the disorder of the governmental functions (similar to Moltke in the Franco-Prussian War when they captured Paris).

Oh, and like Napoleon, he even got exiled once and kept returning to power.

Look at US tactics vs the Native Americans. It's certainly a glasshouse. They were harsh but considered a means to a political end, as were the heavy handed tactics in Texas.

Obl was ideological and a completely different agenda and tactics in a very different age.

ObL and extremist Islam is inherently bad by almost every measure across many cultures.

Santa Anna's villain or hero status is much more subjective. If he had been putting down a native American rebellion with the same tactics, none would blink an eye. But, white men, that's a different story for history. The "officers" of the Texans were not afforded privileges because they were not viewed as an Army. Doing so would give legitimacy to their cause, they were illegal immigrants and insurgents, which is why he instituted his piracy, no quarters policy.

LSU fans will be the first to get in your face and scream profanities but they're not otherwise intimidating once you get past the drunkenness and complete degeneracy

Give me 50 coal miners and moonshiners from Monteagle Mountain in Tennessee.

I'll fight any other 100 of your sissy fan bases out there,

If you want to add guns and knives in the mix. I'll keep the same 50 and you can have 150.

Thank you for the kind and well written response!

Not sure why they downvoted it, but will upvote to offset

I guess I am more pragmatic in that all wars are fought for resources but blamed on other causes. In that sense, SA and OBL are no different. Jesus was a black jew who advocated love yet modern Christians and Islamic folks want to fight a war about it.

Mountain folks in eastern Kentucky and Tennessee may fight as white, black, or native when not even aware their bloodline contains all 3.

No, thank you. I like the rare occasion on the Rant when different perspectives can be discussed in civility, even if not sports related.

I am from the Tri Cities area. Most of my family came into that area in the 1780's but they were German, and those communities stayed intact until post-Civil War. After that started seeing migration out of the area. I believe where my grandmother's family in Cawood KY is only about 90 or so miles away or less as the crow flies.
