In fact, for the most part, the NCAA, member institutions, etc didn't care about the student athlete.
It took a scandal to get them to offer unlimited food (nutrition)for the players. Enacted in 2014

It wasn't until the following year that the NCAA allowed stipends to athletes for full cost of attendance.

At all turns programs protected their P/L over the welfare of the athletes.

Then of course, Mark Emmert and the Presidents sat by under the myth of the "amateur student athlete" knowing all along that players were getting paid under the table or being brokered by clubs in hoops. While they were in their deny, delay, deflect period, they let courts decide and dictate that students were entitled to their own NIL and revenue sharing from the huge pot of cash they were making. Followed by the perversion of the NIL by "collectives".

None of the PTB are innocent in all of the crap.
