In fact, for the most part, the NCAA, member institutions, etc didn't care about the student athlete.
It took a scandal to get them to offer unlimited food (nutrition)for the players. Enacted in 2014
It wasn't until the following year that the NCAA allowed stipends to athletes for full cost of attendance.
At all turns programs protected their P/L over the welfare of the athletes.
Then of course, Mark Emmert and the Presidents sat by under the myth of the "amateur student athlete" knowing all along that players were getting paid under the table or being brokered by clubs in hoops. While they were in their deny, delay, deflect period, they let courts decide and dictate that students were entitled to their own NIL and revenue sharing from the huge pot of cash they were making. Followed by the perversion of the NIL by "collectives".
None of the PTB are innocent in all of the crap.

Next year probably. There's nothing, lawfully, that keeps someone from having unlimited eligibility, theoretically.

My thoughts exactly. I mean, they are paying college athletes now. Why put up some pretense that they are protecting amateur athletics? I suspect in the future we will see a team of professional athletes playing with not compunction to attend the school they represent. College athletics will evolve into farm teams for the NFL, NBA and MLB.
And, in many ways I say the college athletes have only themselves to blame for this. They demanded to be paid beyond Tuition, training, tutoring, medical, housing, food etc. They wanted cash. Now they have cash, so cut NFL players will represent colleges and get the larger contracts, and the top players from high schools will get much smaller NIL contracts, and the backup players will fall off of rosters completely.
Congratulations. They played themselves.

If they have to remain enrolled, I could see the Big 10 and SEC becoming a super league where players kind of go back and forth, at least for kind of the 27 and under crowd. An older guy likely wouldn't want to enroll in college over and over.
The rest of P4 would be an odd mix of traditional high school recruits and former pros/constant transfers. G5 would probably still be your traditional high school recruit college players because they can't pay a guy enough to play football full time.
A kid there would likely be trying to move up to the current SEC/Big 10 super league and then the NFL.

There was a middle ground that could have been handled a couple decades ago. Once the tv contracts became extreme for football and basketball, it became increasingly difficult to ignore the money.
Edit: I’m suggesting NCAA and conferences (not all) dropped the ball. Perhaps increased stipends or other avenue may have been plausible

Honestly, I don't know what the BEST solution would be....but I think it's dumb for people to to equate how much colleges or any other businesses make with what should be paid to employees. Businesses, and colleges are essentially businesses, are in business to make as much money as they can.
With tuition costs for public Universities at about $30,000 a year, then adding tutors, room, board, medical, stipends etc to it, players were getting somewhere around $60,000 a year to play sports. That is far and away much more than what most college students get at their jobs. That is not chicken feed.

I also think it's dumb that these guys are being called "NFL players" because they went to a training camp and got cut.
Do people think that 1 month of training camp is some competitive advantage over Spring, Summer, and Fall camp in an SEC program?

It’s guys who got an extra year of eligibility after the fact and weren’t able to make a decision. At the time they had no choice but to try to make it in pro ball. These cut UDFAs were heading to UFL or Canada if not for the Colorado court order. But now, in clown world, they’re “former NFL players”.
