We should score 20+ on Georgia now that Richardson will hopefully play most of the game. They are good but a good offense can score on them.

I agree. If your defense shows up like they did in the 2nd half against us you’ve got a shot at the win

I don't know if you'll get there, but your offense is not what it was the last three years. I started noticing it in that game.

On Emory Jones 90 plus yard drive, he couldn't hit a wide open WR for a first down on the opening series of plays. He also undershot a WR a few yards from the LOS that would've given UF a manageable third down. Instead they had a third and ten and still converted, eventually driving the length of the field to score. That used to never, ever happen. You got a handful of plays against the Bama defense in a game and you better make them.

So far, that's what it's been like on our defense. I haven't seen either of these two UF QBs show the consistency they will need to score a lot of points on our defense. We'll see.

I don’t think it matters whether they play a team that can test them. Even elite defenses give up points to bad teams. Our 2011 defense gave up 14 to Arkansas, 14 to Auburn, and 21 to Georgia Southern.

That's a solid point.

The fact is, in order to have a truly elite defense... it takes having a marginal offense or the right coaching mindset.

NOBODY has an elite defense with their second and third string players. Nobody. Therefore, to be elite, you need a reason to keep your first string defense in the game for the majority of the game... i.e., where your team DOESN'T have to go into garbage time. If you are up by two touchdowns instead of five, your team is far more likely to keep the better group of players on the field. Ball control offense works better than big play high scoring offenses to help out your defense.

Similarly, coaching philosophy can play a big role. Do you keep players in the game to build their stats? Or do you try to play as many young players as possible to get them experienced? Are you willing to sacrifice consistency year-to-year in order to save up talent for a huge push in one year?

I tend to think that these are the sort of things that Kirby is trying to do. There's nothing at all wrong with taking this approach. I think it is a little different than Alabama's current approach, but if it works for Georgia, I can certainly understand it. Alabama has certainly won championships in the past taking that approach.

JMHO.

You scored 13 on kentucky. Georgia's defense is better than Kentucky's.

But I'm telling you this - Alabama does not have a single offensive lineman that can block one of those three tackles from Georgia.

Absolutely Bama does!

But that's the problem, a single offensive lineman.

Honestly, that's been my concern all year and it showed up at the Texas A&M game. We have had very inconsistent play on the OL. I hate to say it but it's an honest assessment and opinion.

2. This UGA defense is good but they haven’t played a single high powered offense. They really lucked out with their west games and Clemson being in a rebuild year.
3. Mark it down, they will get torched in the SEC championship and again in the first round of the playoffs.

I’m not arguing that this defense will end the season as an all time great…there’s a lot of football left and they have a lot left to prove.

But the argument that they haven’t faced an explosive defense is because a lot of people just look at the rankings of the offenses, which are based on total yards per game, or points per game. That stat is useless, as a tool.

Yards per attempt is what is important, coupled with efficiency, and linking these to scoring. And UGA is holding teams to under 50% their rushing yards against other opponents and 70% of their passing yards and their efficiency is amazing. The numbers are elite, and ridiculously so. There are enough data points to think that unless they just have an off day, these numbers should hold against even an elite offense…they just have to keep executing, so we’ll see.

The thing is, against an OSU or Bama offense, these numbers indicate that UGA will give up around 30-35 points. UGA is almost at the CEILING of what is statistically reasonable, and should still expect to surrender that many points. That’s just the reality of modern offense. Against either team, it’s “6-5 and pick’em”.

To be fair, they had 15 penalties with 9 false starts. I doubt we get those gifts. I'm not worried about the game. Just saying we'll probably get a better effort than they gave Kentucky overall.

the 39 Vols gave up 1.3 points a game. Statistically, I doubt that record is ever touched.

I think you folks need to define, specifically, what constitutes a "good offense".

Arkansas and their QB were going to the first real test that we would see, and we shut them down. Then Auburn and their poor man's Manziel was supposed to expose our defense with his legs. That didn't happen. Then Kentucky was going to expose us with their rushing attack and their all-world WR to go along with their elusive QB. That didn't happen, either.

It could be that our defense isn't as good as they've looked so far this season and that when we play Florida or Alabama (?), our defense will look like all others out there. However, I wouldn't bet on it. Even bad offenses can score points on decent defenses, but our defense has been absolutely stifling outside of a few drives all season.

Every decent team UGA has played has had offenses that are heavily based on the run with a limited passing game. Georgia is great at stopping the run. I'm interested to see them play a team with a dynamic passing attack.
