One coach I always noticed never gets mentioned on these lists is Bernie Bierman. Maybe there's a reason, but he won 5 national titles at Minnesota. I'm a bit surprised he's always forgotten.

I'm not saying I'd take him, I'm just wondering if anyone can shed some light on why no one knows who the hell he is?

i knew i recognized that name- he turned around Tulane in the late 20's before going to minnesota. F that guy and tulane.

Hell of a coach, but it looks like post WWII his winning % went way down

That's what it looked like with Neyland first, but then he turned it around and won a couple more national championships.

Too bad his coaching career had to be interrupted, though. He may have missed out on a couple more national titles. Oh well, America needed it's generals.

I'm wondering why no one ever mentions him, though. Maybe because Minnesota has never been relevant?

Minnesota hasn't been relevant in recent times, but were real power in the 1930s and 40s, winning 5 national championships, and adding another in 1960.

Jimmy Johnson or Bobby Bowden. Do not know why no one seems to think much of Bowden, but before he got older and was just trying to hang around because of Jo Pa, he was a great one. He built FSU out of nothing and was ahead of his time in the 80's (kinda like Spurrier was in the 90's).

You bring up a good point. I think among many fans, Bowden's recent shittiness really put a damper on people's views on his HC abilities.

I said bend the rules, not pay someone 200k fricking dollars!! And I brought up Carrol because three people said on this thread they would pick him. My point was why did you find fault with switzer and not Carrol or Johnson.

Any doubts that Switzer ran a dirty program were dispelled by the NCAA’s report covering 1985 and 1986. Assistant coaches offered envelopes with cash to recruits, cars were provided, bills were taken care of, and game tickets were sold. An internal OU investigation revealed no additional violations. Unfortunately, ex-players and recruits talked, so the NCAA reported additional violations.

OU again investigated and found nothing more. The NCAA sanctioned OU, and informed them that if they fought the sanctions, the NCAA had more they could investigate.

Oklahoma received a three year probation, a two year television ban, and a one year bowl ban. Switzer was fired.

I think Carrol and Johnson were dirtier than most as well.

I was with you when you said Osborne, but holtz proves you smoke a lot of crack.

Beatdown Switzer and cost him a national title at Arky in the Orange Bowl (31-6). Was amazing at ND. The two previous coaches and all after him have been terrible. Took a 1-10 USCe team to 8-4 in two years and 9-3 in three years. He revived their entire program. Consecutive New Years bowls for the first time in school history. Holtz was a great coach and I think he ran a cleaner program.
