I had to think on this one a while but if I can't take the Bear, then I'm going with Tom Osborne.

Just make sure you don't face anyone who takes Switzer.

Switzer did get them put on probation and had to resign.

Barry Switzer resigned as the University of Oklahoma's football coach Monday, saying that he was frustrated by National Collegiate Athletic Assn. rules that do not "recognize the financial needs of young athletes."

Switzer said he wanted to be a spokesman for changing NCAA rules that he said did not allow coaches to treat athletes humanely.

"I am not making excuses but simply giving an explanation when I say it was difficult to turn my back on these young men when they needed help," he said. "We have created a system that does not permit me or the program to buy a pair of shoes or a decent coat for a player whose family can't afford these basic necessities.

"How can any coach stick to these rules when a young man's father dies many miles away and the son has no money for a plane ticket home to the funeral?"

Everyone knows all about the problems he had durning his exit. We know more about what went on at Oklahoma because to this day he talks about it honestly. Several people on this thread chose Pete Carrol, do you think his hands were clean? Jimmy Johnson left ok state on probation. A lot of great football coaches bent the rules. I don't like it but it happened and is still happening. Some have been caught some have not. And some can cheat and the NCAA doesn't care!

If that was the attitude, then people wouldn't be flipping about Chizik. Beyond that you mention Pete who also put USC on probation and vacated a national title. I wouldn't pick a guy that put my school on massive probation over a guy like Osborne or Lou Holtz.

Incredible when you think that at one time or another Arkansas could have had Johnson,Switzer,Carroll, or Bryant as our coach and we whiffed each and every time.

We whiffed on Frank Thomas, Spurrier and Bobby Bowden. So I feel your pain.

4 of them were before 1905. I'm not sure he'd be my choice, however I wouldn't have picked Chizik and he's doing ok.

The point a minute teams were pretty impressive though. I would go with Bo. I think he would have been very very successful at bama

Wouldn't pick Carroll.

Switzer would be my first choice. Arkansas boy and had a winning record against every major coach of his era [he was five and three vs Jimmy Johnson, though he lost three straight to the Canes].

Jimmy Johnson would be my second choice. Another Arkansas boy as well.

After that, either Bob Devaney, Bud Wilkinson, Tom Osborne, or Bear Bryant. Bryant might actually be ahead of JJ now that I think about it.

I said bend the rules, not pay someone 200k fricking dollars!! And I brought up Carrol because three people said on this thread they would pick him. My point was why did you find fault with switzer and not Carrol or Johnson.

Switzer coached for 15 years at oklahoma. He quit not just because of the probation. A lot of problems off the field helped force him out. Ask an Oklahoma fan who they would rather have switzer or holtz?

I was with you when you said Osborne, but holtz proves you smoke a lot of crack.

Bill Curry.. if he could have beaten Auburn would have stood the test of time.

Mack Brown.. Class guy, great coach, mentor for hundreds of up and coming coaches.

Tom Osborne.. Nothin' but respect. The man got it done.

Jimmy Johnson or Bobby Bowden.

Do not know why no one seems to think much of Bowden, but before he got older and was just trying to hang around because of Jo Pa, he was a great one. He built FSU out of nothing and was ahead of his time in the 80's (kinda like Spurrier was in the 90's).
