Tennessee and Auburn were rivals for many years.
Tennessee traditionally played teams that were in the SEC West. There was no annual Tennessee Florida game until divisions. Nor Tennessee Georgia game.

No. It is not necessary. Boring game against an irrelevant team and Fayetteville is far af from BR. The Arky baseball series is a totally different story though they are by far my favorite to play and have great fans. I also don’t want Aggie as a permanent opponent either because their fan base is just weird and not fun to drink or party with. OM and Bama fans are fun to tailgate with, bring plenty of off the field talent, and it’s not a long drive to visit from BR.

The rivalry that the 1st expansion killed.
While Auburn currently leads the series 29-22-3, both teams were annual SEC opponents for 35 years. The rivalry was once a very significant conference game, but now the meetings are less frequent and often don't carry the same stakes as they did in the past.

I understand this, but that's been a long, long time ago. Never met many Auburn fans clamoring to play Tennessee every season.
