If you ONLY go by head to head then Tennessee should be ranked ahead of Alabama. But that's not all they go by. Granted, the other criteria they go by is completely inconsistent. Tennessee's SOS is 25th, while Alabama's is 7th. Tennessee has a losing record this season against CFP Top 25 teams at 1-2, and Alabama's record against CPF top 25 teams is 2-2. They almost certainly factored in our injuries for that game we played. We were missing a lot of starters spread between offense and defense.

However, Alabama still has no business being ranked 5th, but it's not all that shocking to see them ranked ahead of Tennessee once the other criteria is applied.

This weekend sorts a lot out in the SEC.

These rankings shouldn't be released at all right now.

Only college football does this stupid thing with having a selection show and standings 6 times.

College baseball waits and releases one bracket.

College basketball waits and releases one bracket.

Every sport only releases the standings after all games are played.

There should be nothing released until the day after conference championship games are played like all other sports.

How is Bama 5 and UTk 13?

Bama's losses were to Tennessee and UGA. They beat SC and UK who are not traditional big names but are highly ranked so far.

Using the playoff rankings, Bama's losses are to #2 an #13. They have wins against #6 and #21.

UT has losses to #7 and #21. Wins against #5... and that's it for ranked teams.

Bama has better losses an better wins

Better question: where would UTk be ranked if Bama wasn't currently at 5?

The CFP committee is obviously not impressed with the context of the TSIO win, and it being the single UTk win over an opponent with a win % over .500 going into week 10.

The Vols are also 8 spots higher than. UsCe after a head to head loss. But, that is just different.

Every 2 loss SEC has a chance to play it's way into the CFPs this year. Just let it play out
