I have not seen Liberty play. But everyone is picking them over MSU.

First ESPN and then some dude on CBS. Is Liberty good or something? Why are people picking them to beat us in the first round?

I admit that I know nothing about them other than they are supposed to have a pretty good coach. Did we get a bad draw for our first round? Figured some of you guys might know .

IIRC almost every year a 12 seed upsets a 5 seed. Its almost a guaranteed "cinderella". You all drew that straw I guess, since the other 5 seeds are Auburn, Wisconsin, and Marquette.
A couple years back Steve F Austin was "the" upset pick. Media does what it does

No. I was just about to make a thread about liberty being any easier matchup than yale. Yale (27-7) has sos is 136, liberty(25-6)sos 279...liberty also loss to vandy
And yale has more size and upperclassmen in the starting 5. I think its a great first round matchup for state, those guys just being sec doubters

Just FYI I have State and Auburn as the only 5 seeds winning their first game. Marquette and Wisconsin are very very VERY overrated, especially Wisconsin. There's nothing special to me about them.

I read somewhere not to read much into them losing to Vandy. Vandy had a key player get hurt after that game. If he had not gotten hurt, things may have players out differently for Vandy.

Yeah, Garland the 1st round PG who put up 33 in that game.

FWIW, I think all four 5 seeds win this year.

Thats true and still a decent close game. Everything I have read since is that Liberty is deep where we are not. I think our 5 on 5 is more athletic, but making a deep run unless Howland lets Nick play is probably not gonna happen. I would settle for sweet 16 in that case.

Just my opinion but Liberty seems like the weakest of the 12 seeds. States a 7 point favorite for a reason. I think Dayton and Wofford are much better and State defeated them.

The 4/13 upset is actually more likely than 5/12 imo. 2 4 seeds lost last year in the first round and 0 5 seeds did.

Yeah I would agree but we MSU fans know we are Jekyll and Hyde. My only hope is that Nick gets to play and Aric Holman picks up where he left off last game. He played one of his best off the bench.

We played a pretty poor ballgame against them in Huntsville and led by 5-10 the entire game and won by 9. They may have had an off night but I wasn't super impressed.

State could lose if they play poorly and Liberty makes shots, but it doesn't stick out as a "DANGER DANGER" 12/5 game to me.

I don't really equate two talking heads as "everyone". I think something like 80% will end up picking State in online brackets.

We should not lose to Liberty. That doesn't mean we won't if we play like we have at times.

That's just looking at one year. Here are the stats on seeded upsets in round 1:

16/1 - 1/136 games (.74%, LOL UVA)
15/2 - 8/136 games (5.88%)
14/3 - 21/136 games (15.44%)
13/4 - 28/136 games (20.59%)
12/5 - 47/136 games (34.56%)
11/6 - 51/136 games (37.5%)

So there's a siginifcant jump up from 13/4 to 12/5 upsets, and 12/5 is very similar to 11/6 actually.
