Thing about my grandfather is that he doesn't wear his service on his sleeve. He enlisted to aid in the war effort, not in the hopes that civilians would suck his kneecaps in thanks for his service.
He doesn't have bumper stickers and placards plastered all over his car; he has a single, small rank insignia in the lower left of his windshield which grants him access to military bases and carries his DoD ID which grants him access to officers' clubs for a nice meal.
If you saw him, you'd think he was just another WW2-generation fella who has had the good fortune to last as long as he has.
