In a way, beating LSU today would go a long ways toward an 8-team playoff. If the P-5 conference champs automatically qualified and there were 3 at large berths, UCF would be in the playoffs this year and last. It's the only way to avoid an eventual complete split between the P5 and G5 schools into two championships.

OK, you want a rational, non-smarmy or insulting answer, that still probably will go over your head?

College football is the most traditional sport on the planet today. Most of the top dogs have programs with 100-year histories if not longer. Some of them have literally been doing it since the 1890s. The history is documented.

The top echelon of college football is an exclusive club. It takes more than just winning a bunch of games to gain admittance or even respect. You can say that's unfair ... an argument can probably be made that it's unfair ... but it's reality that will not be changed if UCF wins today and goes 100-0 over the next decade.

To gain admittance to that club, to gain respect for your program, you've got to do what Florida State did. You've got to understand your place on the landscape, accept it without argument and with a smile on your face as you eat every spoonful of caca that is required.

You've got to go play the big dogs on their turf, under their terms even if they're dictatorial and seem unfair and seem disrespectful to you, with no expectation that you're on an equal level to them even if you have a better record. You've got to go play at their place, even if you don't get a return game or if you have to give them two or even three games at their place to get them to come to your place once.

And then you've got to beat some people's asses under those conditions.

Daddy Bowden did that at Florida State, agreed to play anybody, any place, any time, and that program made its bones on the field. But still in some ways, it took a decade or longer before FSU stopped being looked down at as pretenders or nouveau riche.

That's the formula for gaining respect for your program. Somebody needs to explain it to your dufus AD.
