Not necessarily.
The east is generally thought of as "up" when UGA, UF, and UT are all good at the same time, or at least 2/3 of them are, and usually for multiple years. That hasn't happened in a while, but I wouldn't say the west is "up" right now either. I think that was OP's point.

Yeah only Miss State is like 12-4 vs the east and has beat every east team during that time. All 7 of them.

Last year: UGA beat Auburn. Auburn killed Arkansas. Arkansas killed Florida. Florida beat LSU. LSU killed A&M. A&M beat UT. UT beat Mizzou. Mizzou beat Arkansas.
I'm sure there are other examples out there, but that's all I remember off the top of my head. Last year, it was Alabama then a bunch of 8-4ish teams.

It was 14-12 and y'all ended up 7-6, but it definitely felt like a loss because Lattimore tore his ACL that game.
