Would a team on the bubble for the CFP, one not playing in a conference championship (and thus free that week), be allowed to schedule an extra game at the end of the year to bolster its resume? I could see two bubble teams agreeing to play to try and increase their chances. Say Ohio State loses to Penn State. Wouldn’t it make sense for OSU and Bama to play to each increase their chance of getting in? I know it would probably never happen but I’m curious if it could.

In a way, it’s the opposite of the thought process of an undefeated team declining to play in a conference championship. If you are in the top 4 before the extra game, what sense does it make to risk losing?

Why not cut out the middle man and just televise a Bama Red vs White scrimmage. Only Bama beats Bama, so this would count as what, 4 wins?

stfu and win your games.

No you can't give bama an extra game to negate losing to LSU at home.

You are basically expanding the cfp playoff with a random game.

No cfp for you.

Melt day 5.

If you're going to do this, you might as well make it an 10 team playoff with a "wildcard" round. The first round the 1 through 4 seeds would have byes and the 5-10 seeds would play play in games.

I figured I’d only get troll responses but it’s a legitimate question. Why couldn’t a team play an extra game to try and get in, particularly if there is another team in the same boat?

My question is not whether or not it’s fair or right, but whether it can be done. I’m curious if there are rules against it.

That’s actually what made me think of it - we scheduled that game late in the season because of probation. Why couldn’t a late game be added for other reasons? It seems like the conference would sign off it meant increasing the odds of a CFP participant.

Are there no lawyers in Alabama? Y'all think you can just go and play because you want to? That's not how this works, that's not how any of this works.

I’m sure the situation can be avoided altogether years in advance by not filling your OOC schedule with Western Kentuckys and Dukes.

What team would agree to that with Bama that is a good enough win elevate Bama to deserving of being in the playoff?

It would make more sense to expand the playoffs rather than let Bama decide when and how they get in the playoffs.

Committee already said conference championships are not major factors in their decision. That being said, winning a conference championship gives you an extra top quality win, that weighs greatly in their decision.
Not sure they thought that through before making that statement.

Why? If it’s all about quality wins, what is dumb about two teams each trying to add a quality win? This is not going to happen, it’s just a hypothetical question, so there is no need for people to get so upset.

If you schedule no ranked OOC teams while Tennessee is down, then if you can’t win your division, you don’t belong anywhere near a playoff.

So what you're saying is gain an unfair advantage. There is a system in place. You play by the rules or you don't play. And to be clear, Bama gets more benefit of the doubt than just about any other program, so you already have advantages built in that others don't.

I would love it. More good football. Like a play in game.
