UMas was damn good that year for sure. Thankfully we took them down in the Final Four en route to the title.

The 96 UK team would probably go undefeated.

Didn't the '96 Gamecocks beat y'all twice?

ETA: Nevermind, I was thinking of the '96-'97 team: LINK: https://www.thestate.com/sports/college/university-of-south-carolina/usc-mens-basketball/article130843329.html

UK only lost twice that year. To UMass and Mississippi State, who were both final four teams and who they split with that season.

I was months old in 86 so the 05/06 team is my best. That team didn’t have a PG and still made the final 4. I think they’d finish top 4. Davis was a load. Thomas a freak. Temple a lockdown defender. Lot of strength, length and athleticism and a clutch shooter in Darrel Mitchell.

You think this team is better than the 1983 Final Four team? Also you had a guy named Dominique Wilkins that was a pretty fair basketball player.

Is the SEC even really better this year than it was in 06?

06 SEC standings
LSU (14-2) West 1
Tennessee (12-4) E1
Alabama (10-6) W2
Florida (10-6) E2
Arkansas (10-6) W3
Kentucky (9-7) E3

LSU: Final 4 team. Beat JJ Reddicks Duke, PJ tucker/Aldridge Texas (1 and 2 seeds)

Florida: Champion.

Alabama: Preseason SEC fav. 10 seed. Beat 7 seed Marquette, and lost to UCLA (ncaa runner up) by 3.

Kentucky: Lead by Rajon Rondo, Morris, Crawford. lost in the second round to 1 seed UCONN by 4.

Arkansas: Upset in the first round. still a really good squad.

Tennessee: 2 seed great team, but upset in the second round.

Honorable mention to South Carolina who... beat Florida twice in season, Won the NIT in dominant fashion, and made it to the finals of the SEC tourney losing to Florida in a VERY close game.

Had State been able to beat Syracuse in’96 it would have set up the rubber game against UK in the final. That dang 2-3 zone and we had no answer for John Wallace. Unfortunately for us.
Had we won that game I think UK would have been the slight favorite but the game may have been an epic one. Just hate that it did not happen.
I think UK was quite relieved when we lost as Syracuse was no match for them whereas State really matched up well with the Cats.

Looks like you don’t have to hide today after pulling a nailbiter quad 3 win. I know you were iffy until Arkansas blew it.

I remember hoping for exactly that to happen. That was the best State team I can ever remember seeing us play.
