Nike gets to use Oregon as their prototype. They are also a sporting goods company. everything they wear is a nike advertisement

A better comparison would be why can't the Walton family do for Arkansas what T. Boone Pickens has done for Okie St.

You're confusing Wal-Mart with Waffle House maybe?

Because Nike invests a ton in football and is arguably the premiere brand in sports. Plus Nike is cool in popular culture and casual clothes. That draws people's attention.

Wal Mart not so much. They have the money sure, but they aren't in the athletic market like Nike.

What would they even offer the players? Free Starter brand gear?

Apart from building Bud Walton, Wal-Mart and the Waltons spend most of their local $ supporting academics and the local arts.

They gave the university $350 million or so over the past 15 years. The $15 million that Bud Walton gave to the arena project is small change by comparison.

Their $350 million is small change compared to the billion or so they've spent on local arts projects, including Crystal Bridges.

Tyson, Lindsey, Reynold's Foundation, etc have been larger donors to sports, apart from Bud Walton.

West Coast hippies are more easily duped?

No, that can't be it.

In-bred Ozark hillbillies thought that facility upgrades meant indoor plumbing for all!

You're telling me they spent >$350MM on something no one outside of Arkansas has ever heard of?

I'll never understand why someone who supports a team in the south, much less an Alabama team, has the gall to make a comment like that.

Correct. T-Bone's "donation" was the investment income from a bunch of T-Bone-owned enterprises/projects, many of which didn't pan-out, like the windfarm bullshite. Okie State built a lot of stuff with the backing of the theoretical T-Bone money and now they're in a lot of debt they're going to have trouble paying. He pretty much screwed them.
