You're welcome. Imagine how dominant he would have been had he been sober and focused.

Pete could have hogged the ball for me any time he wanted to. One of the greatest ever to step on a basketball court.

My Dad always said in college he was the best ball handler he ever saw.

I planned to watch a couple minutes of this the other day and ended up watching the whole thing

Pistol's passion for basketball is mesmerizing

A lot of teams played more uptempo and you couldn’t grab and hold as much then. Dan Issel averaged 33.9 PPG his senior season. UK and LSU played some high scoring games. Rupp played straight man on Maravich and he got 65 but Issel got 51 and we won. It was all about shooting percentage. But if there had been a three point shot it would have been a lot closer. Rupp admired Maravich and liked to watch him play. Hell, we all did. I was just a kid but we’d all wear converse with floppy socks.

Sure, not the fact that he was great shot, it was just because his dad was coach.

With no 3? After seeing a game like sears had tonight and way shy of 44. And to average that and shooting a lot of 3s that counted as 2s. Just unfathomable

The kid with the floppy socks from Western Pennsylvania could shoot. By the way, he also was the most creative passer the game has ever known.

Austin Carr still holds the NCAA record 61 points in a tournament game. I’m surprised Pistol didn’t put up more averaging 44.

Basketball doesn't recruit sharpshooters anymore. That basically stops at High School.

So? It got the program attention and the school laughed all the way to the bank.

Pete never got to the NCAA. In his day only 25 teams got into the NCAA and 16 into the NIT, way different era.

Because his basketball handling was about as good as you can get . He could do things with a basketball that not many could and he did it in a time where most didn’t have his athletic ability .

Pistol Pete, Jerry West, Bob Cousy... those guys would have never played today.

Basketball today is a game of chaos. Ball handling is no longer a factor, as infractions are not even called. I could hunt down random high school kids across the country that could outshoot NBA players at the 3-point line.

I say just put them in pads and run the basketball down the court.

Pistol was just another world...

Use this as perspective: take a spectacular player you've seen. In my case, it was Chris Jackson in his freshman year. Incredible player. I saw him put 50 on Florida, raining 3's, making insane drives etc.
You take away the 3 pt line, and I don't think he gets 44 (he hit something like 9 threes that game). Still a great game, but he doesn't even hit Pete's AVERAGE.

You can call him a ball hog all you want, the ball still has to go through the hoop. People forget that showboats still get tired and run out of gas (and moves), Pete didn't.

Yep, was tough back then. Finish 2nd in the conference behind UK and not even get in the tournament.

LSU lost in the NIT semifinals to Marquette, which was ranked 8TH in the AP poll. Marquette played a triangle-and-2 defense with 2 guys on Pete the whole game.

Marquette went on to win the NIT. Can you imagine a top 8 team in the nation and didn't even get to play in the NCAAs?

Imagine how dominant Pistol would have been with a 3-Point line.

Drinking was probably the only way he could deal with Gumps

My theory on Pete is this.

Back then... The Harlem Globetrotter were really big. When they were on TV...Everybody watched...

Besides the comedy... a lot of the Globetrotters act included otherworldy basketball handling, shooting and passing skills.

Pete saw that stuff growing up and actually integrated it into real basketball.

Watching Pete on the court was basically like watching a white Globetrotter performing without somebody whistling ' Sweet Georgia Brown' in the background. .
