Well I didn't get into Stanford obviously and instate tuition was cheaper so I chose Alabama. Auburn offered a lot for my field and I did not consider them mainly because I was raised a Tide fan.

Actually football did affect my college decision, but not how one might think. During my freshman year at another university I decided to change my major to engineering and to transfer to a school with a better program. As funny as it may sound, one of the criteria I considered was what response I would get from people when replying to the question of what college I went to. For example, I knew Auburn had a good engineering school, but if I responded that I went there, a conversation on football would start. I wasn't sure if I'd get accepted, but knew Georgia Tech is one of the better engineering schools in the country. Also attractive was that their football team had been bad for quite some time. I knew there was no risk of a football conversation coming up when I told people I went there. The first thing that would come to people's minds would always be "that's a great engineering school" and know I didn't choose a school just because I liked their football team.

I grew up as an Auburn fan.
I liked the campus.
Back then, it was not the same applying to college. I visited Alabama and Auburn. I fit in better culturally at Auburn.
I did my clinical years in Med school at Tuscaloosa and enjoyed it. I met my wife there.
Both are good schools with broad academic programs and extracurricular activities, etc.

I grew up on everything LSU. All of my family is in LA but we moved to GA. Didn't want to go to UGA or any other school in state. Studying petro at LSU gave me in-state tuition deal, a quality degree and a great job after graduation. I seent some amazing football and had a helluva time! LSU was a perfect fit for me.

I didn't go to Bama, because Florida instate tuition was cheap as hell, and I wasn't going to spend an extra 20,000+ a year in tuition, unless it was an elite level university. And while I was on track to potentially do it, I started partying too early to earn a Vandy scholarship. It's just not worth that much extra debt, just because I started cheering for their football team 15 years earlier.

One of my friends and colleagues PLAYED baseball on scholarship at Alabama in the 1980's and graduated. He is a die hard Auburn fan and wears Auburn gear all the time. He will wear Alabama baseball gear, but not football or any other sport.
I know a guy like that. Except it was Auburn and Golf. My wife's grandmother has a ton of sisters, and several of them live around Northport. This is some distant cousin and he grew up around Tuscaloosa and is a huge Bammer. But he got a golf scholarship to Auburn. Or maybe it was academic scholarship and he played golf.
I also have a cousin who grew up her entire life in Alabama. But her dad is a big LSU fan. She ends up at Alabama for in-state tuition, but wore her LSU gear to games in the student section.

None at all for me. I grew up in VA, I didn't get into UVA and had no desire to go any other VA school. Got into auburn and I knew it was the school for me after my first visit.

The Army told me where to go, so I went... to Auburn...

I went to a small private high school, so I figured a small college would be the way to go. After one semester, I realized that idea wasn't so hot, so I transferred to Auburn. They weren't "my" football team at the time, so going there wasn't determined b/c of that...but the fact they had a football team, it certainly didn't hurt with my decision, lol...

It played a pretty big role. Grew up going to Bama games. Was already familiar with the campus. Knew they had a decent engineering college. It was the only school I applied for and I got a pretty good scholarship.
If I could do it again right now, I would go some where on the west coast.

None. I was accepted to multiple Ivy League schools and Duke but attended Alabama on a full scholarship (downvote away). I ended up walking on at Bama, but that was unplanned.
I met my wife, earned a varsity letter, got into med school, and didn't owe anything, so things worked out pretty well.
