Tennessee was the SEC's first team to do so in 1968. It was Tartan Turf made by 3m that would actually fade late in the year.

Kentucky didn’t want to do it, but the real stuff turns brown in our November freezes and is so hard to maintain late in the year. I’m sure Mizzou and Vandy do it for the same reasons. That’s the hardship of being the northernmost schools in the conference.

By the end of the season, the field at commonwealth was always brown and patchy...it just gets too cold in November in Lexington for solid grass growth.
Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Green Bay have grass fields with colder weather than Lexington. I think it just boils down to how much $$ the program is willing to commit to maintaining it.

Kentucky removed their field turf 2 year ago. They are grass now, too. Only Vandy and Mizzou have shite turf now.

Issue is the grass in most SEC stadiums are for longer warmer periods. Putting that nice sponge grass in say Commonwealth and it turns brown the 1st week of October. The fescue they used to use lasted about a month later in colder weather but was not durable.

They’re far enough north that they can use grass more tolerant to colder weather. The problem for Missouri and Kentucky is that they’re kind of in “no man’s land” where southern grass dies off in November but northern grass can’t survive the heat of September.

No, it is synthetic. We tried Bermuda, Bluegrass and Fescue fields and they all had issues. The cool season grasses come up in clumps and Bermuda turned brown then deteriorated.
