Pretty sure exactly what you just said could also be said about Big10 states like Iowa, Nebraska and Indiana.
Hmm not so sure, Indiana is close to 20% Catholic (which I am btw). Remember Notre Dame is there. It is heavily Catholic in the Northern Part of the State as you get near the Illinois Border where Chicago is not that far away. Oklahoma is like 53% Evangelical Protestant, Indiana maybe 30%. Has a strong Mainline Protestant population and as I said about 1 in 5 are Catholic.
Iowa is very similar to Indiana, about 20% Catholic, 60% Protestant but more mainline confessional (Lutheran and Methodist) and a very large secular population of about 20%. I don't think you find 1 in 5 people that are secular in any state in the SEC, definitely not Oklahoma.
Texas is a state that still is heavily religous, 50% Protestant but more Catholic than Oklahoma with about 23%.
Louisiana is very similar to Texas in terms of Religion, about 73% in total Protestant (57%) or Catholic (26%).

Statistics I cited are based on the Pew Research Survey on Religion in the USA if you want to take a look at them yourself.
Stats by state.

ou're pretty much spot on. Six decade Texan here.
Okies are great people not really southern. They're good conservative folks. Last presidential elections every county went red. Always have two good conservative senators in D.C. In some ways they're more like the good corn fed folks of the bread basket. I actually get irritated when people Okies down. I speak up for them.
Now in Texas. Research comes out on who are the most liberal and who are the most conservative universities.
Most conservative is Texas A&M. Aggies are extremely proud of that moniker.
We know most universities are very liberal. Who is always at the top? The between Cal Bezerkeley (no shock there) AND ut-austin, no shock to Texans.
The Lone Star State has both the most liberal and the most conservative universities. It's easy for Texas high school students to pick between the two. One would never ever consider going to the other one under any circumstances.
OKST folks are dang good people. rabid fanbase. A$M folks of course would rather see OU and OKST as number 15 and 16 if SEC doesn't get anybody from NC or VA. Here's one of the reasons. Whorns are just icky libs. Austin is known as the San Francisco of Texas. They're not like the rest of us.
Fair enough, but are all the Texas alums like Bay area liberals? Some of those great UT Golfers like Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw (2 time Masters winner) seem pretty traditional.
Jordan Speith is one of my favorite sports figures, Period other than he went to a Jesuit School (I was taught my Dominicans, that is a Catholic shot at who was better educated between the 2 orders). In all seriousness, Jordan very good dude.
So is it the more recent Texas HS students who went to Texas who are like Bay Area. Does that apply to say people who graduated from their in the 70's to say 90's

Well I am no fan of SF politics. However, I think folks with traditional politics, be they Independent, Republican, maybe some Libertarians, etc who make up the majority of SEC fanbases can show we are more open and respectful of Political differences than the cancel culture of the Bay Area or Hollywood California political culture.
So I plan to treat the Texas fans with respect and welcome them here even though I don't share their far cancel culture Liberal politics.
Maybe us more politically Conservative and Independent SEC fans can help cool down some of this political rhetoric that you see in the Media pushing CRT, anti Police and defund the Police, etc, etc.

quote:This. Might just be because of Arkansas' SWC ties but A&M didn't feel like much of a stretch to me.
Missouri definitely killed that feeling. A&M not so much.
Missouri felt like adding a program from a different planet, though.
OU and Texas both already feel like more of a fit than Missouri to me.

Lol no. It really is just A&M is a backup school, and nowadays it's especially a backup school with your enrollment numbers. I'd planned on going to A&M until I got accepted by UT

The original 10 will always be tight, no matter how many we add.
It will never happen, especially with the bullshite they're pulling now, but I want it to go back to 10 teams. No conference should have more than 10. Conferences should be regional.

That might be why Texas should go to the Pac 12!

We need to stop at 16.
Goal was to breakup the Big 12, we did it.
Now 4 Super Conferences.
SEC is set… Big dog.

I get your point with the states being similar but religion doesn’t have as much to do with it as you’re implying. Oklahoma has more in common with Iowa Kansas and Nebraska than it does Alabama Georgia and Mississippi. Texas with the exception of Eastern and some of central to northern has more in common with New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado than it does with the rest of the southeast.

Most will tell you that has been gone since Arkansas and South Carolina joined. Only ever started to feel apart of the SEC more when A&M and Missouri joined since they got the focus of the hazing shifted to them.

Well we already have two yankees in Missouri and Oklahoma we might as well go all in and add Nebraska and Iowa at this point.

Hell will freeze over before Nebraska ever joins a conference with Texas in it again.
