So the eyeball test mattered for teams 1-4,
Sure it does. It’s part of the committee criteria. Availability of key players. Jordan Travis, more than likely the Heisman winner before getting hurt made FSU what it was. It’s not the same team without him and that was seen by everyone that watched them play their last 2 games.

Why didn’t they move FSU down in the rankings as soon as Travis got hurt? Why did they wait until after the conference championship, but still put them ahead of Georgia and Ohio State? Makes zero sense.
You make a damn good point honestly I think they were just hoping Texas or Alabama lost so they wouldn't be put in that position.
We all know the system is bullshite but when you have five conferences and four spots a conference champion gets left out every year it's a bunch of bullshite and thankfully they're finally rectifying it.
In Florida state's case, however, I have zero sympathy they didn't want a 12 team playoff this year so they can pound sand

So then why did the committee keep moving FSU up after both Travis and Rodemaker got hurt? Only to still keep them ahead of both Georgia and Ohio State, but just low enough to miss the playoff?

I think they assumed FSU would lose at least one game without Travis. Then, they could move them down in the rankings due to a loss and the committee would be off the hook. They wanted a clean end of the season, but instead they got a messy one.

Like I said, they wanted FSU in and had to see them play against Louisville. And Louisville was abhorrent. If the 3rd stringer could have hung 30 on Louisville I have no doubt FSU would have been in. And FSU still couldn’t muster any offense. I’m sure the committee started asking the question, can this team be competitive against 3 of the best teams in the nation. I can imagine it was a resounding “no”.
