Field better teams than P5’s?? I mean, how do the Memphis, UConns, Georgetown, Gonzaga’s, Xavier’s, etc. get all the best talent? I wish I understood what I’m missing. Do they have better coaching or players, or both?

The Big East is a P5 basketball league and also the best one there is.

Because they're traditional power basketball schools.

Memphis

Tons of talent there. Arkansas legit doesn't have a title without Memphis. Nolan hit that area hard.

All you need is a few players. Larry took Indiana State to the title game. Basketball is that kind of sport where 1 or 2 guys completely change a team.

Most of all though, it's a very streaky sport and a single elimination tourney. The shots still have to fall, you get lucky or unlucky and that can be it. It's funny because the NBA title is probably the least flukey league, where one of the regular season favorites almost always wins. Having a series makes all the difference

They aren't getting the one-and-dones. They get guys who are there for three/four years and are able to build rosters and team chemistry.

it’s the same reason why the SEC dominates football, proximity to elite talent. NYC, the DMV and the Northeast in general produce a ridiculous amount of basketball talent.

Georgetown and Memphis really haven’t maintained.

Now UConn is the crazy one. They’re going for their 5th title since 1999 which is impressive. However I saw a stat earlier tonight that since that year, UConn has missed the tourney as many time as they’ve been a top 4 seed in the tourney (9 times). That’s wild.

Less fricking off unlike one and dones and assisting in murder.

Our conf has a ton of great talent, but we also have the biggest drama queens, trouble makers, and Racial idiots in SEC athletics.

Several reasons. Unlike football, there aren't enough scholarships for P5 schools to hog all the talent. I also think player evaluations can be less accurate, since basketball is more of a finesse game, whereas football is mostly just athletic ability. You can be good at basketball without being very athletic, or very athletic and no good.

It doesn't take much money to field a good basketball team, either.

Debatable. Final Four and championships over the past 40 years favors Big East. Since 1980, teams in the championship games included 13 current Big East members and 11 current Big 12 members. For teams in their current conference affiliation, Big East has 8 championships since 1980 (represented by three teams) vs 4 championships from the Big 12 (three from Kansas and one from Baylor).

I’d say Big East is the better league year after year.

Here's one reason:
In America, basketball goals are everywhere. And Americans love the game. It's a game that can be played in gymnasiums, driveways, backyards, etc. A game can break out almost anywhere under the right conditions. And there is an abundance of good talent.

Speaking of talent...Al Dillard comes to mind. At the time Nolan Richardson recruited him, he was older than most players and smaller in stature. And if I remember correctly, Dillard had been working at at a grocery store in Alabama sacking groceries. Most college coaches had never even heard of him. But Nolan had heard (through word of mouth) that Dillard was an excellent shooter. So he took the time to go see for himself and gave Dillard a chance. Turned out to be a truly GREAT 3 point shooter. One of the best ever.

They tend to devote more resources into basketball team building. They don’t field a team of one and done kids. So a good coach that gets to develop a team with the full support of a school with less restrictions on recruiting.

A lot of these mid majors listed (particularly Big East schools) are in major cities/metro areas. Basketball is king there for kids to play. Not football.
