Graduated from Auburn in 2001. I grew up in Tuscaloosa. It wasn't hard to see the distinction between the 2 fanbases when I started school there.

Was raised an Alabama fan.
Got in high school and went on a trip to Auburn with a buddy. (10th grade)
Met a sorority girl there and she kissed my Willy behind the old gymnastics barn. Fell in love with Auburn and went to school there 2 years later.
LSU burned down that barn and my fond memories of it.

I am the only person in my entire family born in the state of Alabama. Even though I was born in Lee County, I had an uncle that graduated from The Capestone. He was my favorite uncle. Took me to T-town a lot to see BAMA play.
It wasn't hard to go there in his footsteps. It was hard as hell, however, to walk on graduation day 46 hours after lung cancer robbed this world of his presence.

For me, winning was an acquired taste

My mom went to Alabama from 1979-81. My dad grew up a fan despite attending Jacksonville State in east Alabama. It just made sense.

When was the last Bama grad on the moon or in space?

We respect them. You want to be like them!

You wake up and decide whether you want to be associated with a historical winner who has political, judicial, & media pull, or you want to be associated with “the other school” that nobody knows anything about except their rivalry with Alabama.
Or you actually apply to a college, get accepted, love the town and campus, meet lifelong friends, maybe even a spouse, earn a degree and later wish you didn’t graduate so fast so you could stay longer before real responsibilities hit home.
You have pride in the school for what it gave back to you regardless of student loans and will alway support and look forward to returning.
Or you can sit in your trailer and rotate your life around the historical winner.

Anyone who's visited Bama understands: it's the epitome in the South & Tradition. For me, it was a perfect fit. However, being from out-of-state, I never developed the contempt for AU. They're more of an annoyance ... like OSU or MSU is to OU and UM.

I grew up in Tuscaloosa county. My mawmaw was the biggest Alabama fan that I’ve ever met. Unlike her, I was also fortunate enough to be able to attend the University.

My father took me to Legion Field for my 1st Alabama game in 1963 at Legion Field. Beat Tennessee 35-0. I was 5 years old, and the rest is History

I’m a big enough man to regress a bit. How many astronauts have been Bama grads or have been actively involved with space exploration? Mattingly was an Auburn grad and most of know his story. Aubie has 6 and over 800 associated with NASA. You can get funny about me asking the wrong question. It’s cool and deserved. Thats the way of this board. Your fellow boy fired off and I fired back. If you want to we can move on to Fortune 500 CEO’s or malpracticing doctors or Lee Night School for crooked lawyers!

How common is this? Because I've met people from Alabama who were born fans of one school, then went to the other, but remained loyal to the original school. I thought that was so crazy.
