How come Alabama and Oklahoma never played each other in the '70s?

Well, technically they played once in 1970 but that was when both teams were not even close to being at their best form. It's pretty disappointing that the two teams with the highest winning percentages in the 1970s, two teams that combined for five national championships in the '70s didn't play each other one single time at their peak. Did Switzer or Bryant ever approach one another about setting up a home and home or did the subject just never come up?

Alabama played plenty of solid home-and-home series in the 70s. Nebraska, Missouri, Southern Cal, Houston, Cal, Maryland, and Washington were among them.

Too busy playing So Cal, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Fla St, Miami, Va Tech, SMU, Maryland, TCU, Ga Tech and Washington probably.

Bear Bryant was not famous for playing tough inter-sectional games. He scheduled USC in 70 and 71 but his motive was to get his butt kicked so he could recruit blacks.

Obviously you have no clue what you're talking about. What about Nebraska, Missouri, Houston, Maryland, Cal, USC, and Washington screams "soft schedule"?

We won the second game in Los Angeles, FYI

And as has already been pointed out, Alabama won the return the game in 1971. Plus, Alabama already had black players on the team in 1970. They were just freshman, and were ineligible to play under NCAA rules in 1970.

Don't remember Nebraska but even MSU beat up on Houston, Miami and FSU in the 70s. Washington? Really?

We played Notre Dame and Nebraska and So Cal later in the 70's. Two of them in the same season once or twice, into the 80's even. Of course there were some cupcakes too, just as scheduling today has some.

They won the Rose Bowl the year before we played them.

I know. The Bear wasn't afraid to play anybody which makes it even more perplexing Alabama never played Oklahoma. The two programs are pretty much mirror images of another. They're very close geographically. The two teams were certainly among the most dominant programs in all of college football along with USC and Notre Dame and Alabama played USC and Notre Dame numerous times in the '70s. It just doesn't make much sense how the two programs never seem to cross paths.

You obviously don't remember Don James at Washington. Alabama played them in 1975 and 1978. James was already turning the Huskies into what they would become in the 80s and early 90s. They finished second in the Pac-8 in '78.
