How are State fans feeling about the Ben Howland experiment?

I understand it's a process and will take some time to change the mindset from the Rick Ray years, but this has been a bit of an underwhelming start. I understand there's a significant depth issue but let's not act like the cupboard was completely bare upon Howlands arrival in Starkville. Ware and Sword were both top 100 4* senior players, Ready is an experienced upperclassman, Newman was a 5* diaper dandy and Weatherspoon was the second best recruit in the state.

State is better than their 7-10 (0-5) record indicates - playing UK, Fla, A&M, and UT all within single digits. It's just the concept of teaching a team that's not used to winning how to close in tight games. What's the vibe down in Oktibehha County? Howland's track record should be buying him a bit more leniency than what was given to Ray

#6 class in the nation coming in for 2016 will buy him more time as well. After the Rick Ray experiment, fans should be pretty patient.

Told them all pre-season expecting a possible tourney bid with this team wasn't happening. Just so little talent. Newman isn't living up to the hype either which doesnt help because that's who they were expecting to be the difference maker this year in possibly sneaking into the tournament.

Howland has had miserable first years at every stop he's ever made as a head coach in college:

Northern Arizona : 9-17
Pitt: 13-15
UCLA: 11-17
MSU: currently 7-10

Gotta get talent in first.

From what I've read, that class is going to be nothing but 4 year players which obviously bodes well for the future

I would be surprised if Kegler is a 4 year player.

Anyways...Howland is bringing in the talent and unless he has just lost his ability to coach I don't really see any reason to panic yet.

Hell, if they finish 10-21 what is the possibility that some of those players jump ship

You didn't tell anybody shite you assclown. No state fan thought this was a tourney team. And Newman started the year with turf toe and is learning a new position.

Like you said, depth is our biggest issue. We've shown that we can play with pretty much all of our conference opponents, we just haven't been able to find our way to a W yet. I think most rational State fans (which is the non-vocal majority) expected this season to be a struggle.

We'll be sitting good in a couple of years, but will be in fear of Howland bouncing on us.

Why would the recruits care? Howland sold them on immediate playing time. It will basically be an entirely different roster next season aside from IJ Ready. I am not even entirely sure Ready will be around.

I doubt many had delusions of immediate success. He seems to have them on the right path, however. The other new coaches should have some success as well.

It is sort of funny to think that Howland was going on title runs in Tinseltown less than a decade ago and now he's coaching in front of 2700 people in Starkville, Mississippi as they get beat by the likes of Southern and UMKC

It will be interesting to see who Ole Miss hires if they have to in 2018 with the new stadium. Should get a good one.

You think Ole Miss can make the tourney next season? I would think missing the tourney two seasons in a row at this point may get him canned. Don't know for sure though.

Bet it won't be as funny this Saturday when he beats OM in front of 2700.

This is the subject of the top non-stickied thread on the Mississippi State board right now. Apparently some of your Moo State brethren missed the memo and actually expected more..

Well one did. He also started a thread saying we should bench Dak Prescott.

I don't know. They'll be awfully young. Kennedy is the best thing thats ever happened to Ole Miss basketball. Anyone who blindly slanders him or calls for his dismissal is incredibly dumb. I will say that Ole Miss should consistently be a tournament team with the opening of the Pavilion. Let AK get 2 full years in the arena and reevaluate the situation

If you look at it purely as a win-loss than it has been slightly disappointing. However the team plays better and smarter. Just hadn't got that w but just as easy could have 4 w s in Sec. Play
