Does the guy bringing the gun believe the guy is asking for the gun because he's in danger, as opposed to intending to commit murder?

I'd bet that a lot of them, prior to this event, have always been proud, gun toting backers of the Second Amendment. Hell, some of them probably thought Gregory and Travis McMichael were innocent.
