He knew the deal with MSU was tainted. The other schools who recruited him (OK and TN) reported no solicitation for money. The shenanigans from Miss State boosters scared Cecil straight.

Never hated cam, players get paid on every team/every year.
Auburn won that shite, just like Reggie bush skullfricked everyone while winning his heisman. The NCAA is the enemy here, not players who get paid.

Cam was a polarizing player because of his personality. That exacerbated a lot of the hate that year, even more so when he won the big games on the schedule the way they did (I.e. the camback, and the run against Lsu, both emotional back breakers). Most Lsu fans hated Cam for that, not the alleged pay for play. I don't think many LSU fans are under the illusion that players aren't being bought in both football and basketball, so most really legit don't care. We're mainly pissed at the double standard the media darlings receive, and Auburn is definitely more in our camp than the other side. Everything is delegitimized somehow, while the media darlings are given mulligans and can do no wrong. It's tiring.
