Gary Patterson interviewed and was begging for the VOLS gig post Fulmer, only for our AD to pick Kiffin instead

Is that actually true? Because he's had plenty of opportunities and has stayed put at TCU for whatever reason.

Either way, it doesn't change my point of making bone-headed coaching choices. I think most schools are just one good hire away from being great, but Tennessee at least has a precedent for winning and being a major in CFB. That's more than a lot of teams can say.

It's why I have hope for Arkansas. Bert was our one major outlier, and I think evidence has shown that winning at Wisconsin is shockingly easy. It isn't just Bert melting down after he came to Arkansas. Look at Gary Anderson after he went to Oregon State. Look at Paul Chryst when he was at Pittsburgh, and then Wisconsin. Something about that place makes people look better than they are anywhere else. Houston Nutt had one losing year at Boise State before we hired him. Chad Morris sucked at SMU. We could have had Jimmy Johnson but we chose to promote Ken Hatfield over him. We chased off Lou Holtz. We fired Petrino because of his mistress. Places like Tennessee and Arkansas have to be careful. Tennessee could be scary if their administration truly cared about winning again.

Yes he interviewed, and was pissed off because he got the assumption that Hamilton had already decided on another candidate.

Believe last season he had a quote in the media talking about how he could have left for Tennessee and some other job, but chance kept him at TCU and he’s glad for it or some shite.

UTk made a living for years by cherry picking the top talent around them...Ohio, Kentucky, WV, Western Virginia, etc...they sold playing on TV thanks to the TSIO when not many games were played on TV. ESPN and wall to wall college football coverage changed the landscape and UTk is one of the schools hurt the most. The best player in WV goes to WV and plays on TV and so on. I doubt they'll ever recover to their past glory. That being said they should be better than they are currently.

Dead program. I plan to focus on non-revenue sports from now on. I think GolfVOLS coach will do well since the state of Tennessee actually puts out decent golf talent.

Hopefully they shut down football and hold locally sanctioned pit bull fighting and maybe convince the boys from Newport to bring down their roosters for some good old fashioned cock fighting in Neyland Stadium.

I would love nothing more than to see a massive rooster named Theo on the back of the Jumbotron.

Pruitt won’t be there long. It’s a tough place to coach. The average Tennessee fan never played football, so they tend to have unrealistic expectations and are quick to turn on a coach. Pruitt will get them as far as they can go, maybe a 9 win season before he’s off to Bama, but their long-term future does not look very bright.

I think they can compete and will be a force soon enough. UT is back in the dirty dirty. They were the ones that drove the market price for George Pickens when UGA snagged him last second. Kirby came with $75K for mama but Pruitt was the one that set the counter offer. Wayna Morris set the bar and Kirby lost that one and wasnt going to get outbid by UT for Pickens. But it served notice that the big orange was back in the game. As long as the NCAA is turning a blind eye UT has the resources to throw dirty money at it and land some classes good enough to compete. Because Pruitt and Kirby have the goods on Bama, they neutralize the REC. Gonna be an interesting next few years.

Vols continue lose out on recruits that grew up Vols fans, entire family bleeds orange, yet they are choosing UGA, Clemson, Bama, etc. For the Vols to get back to the SEC Championship, they have to start winning recruiting battles. I don't see the vols winning more than 6-7 games this year, and for the foreseeable future.

In Hatfield's defense he was very good at Arkansas. He had a lot of trouble with bowl games but he won 75% of his games and had us ranked in the top 15 four out of six years here.

Would Jimmy Johnson have done well here in Hatfield's place? I'm sure he would have. I'm also fairly certain he wouldn't have lasted as long as Hatfield did before he left for any school in America that didn't have Frank Broyles as the AD. Two control freaks like Johnson and Broyles do not make for a pleasant pair. Or Broyles and Holtz. Or Broyles and Nolan.

Jeff Long gets a lot of credit, or blame, for firing Petrino but his hands were tied once it became known that Petrino had hired his side piece to a state job. That is a big no, no.

I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about programs needing to be very careful in letting go the super successful coach. Its a delicate balancing act though. Sometimes you need to quietly slip them out the door, like when Spurrier "retired" about two years before he bothered to leave USC and let the program spiral into the dirt. The Gamecocks would be in much better shape if he'd left earlier and they'd gotten his replacement while they were a top 10 team.

Winning pct and conference titles, they have averaged about 5 or 6 in the sec since 1970, which was about when all sec teams integrated, so I think it's reasonable that's about where they'll generally be. They will have some good good years when they will compete for and even win the title, but long term, about 5th in the conference.

That's all on the current team, when you don't have a single player drafted it doesn't bode real well. The kid was looking out for his best interest. Kinda like Landon Collins, that DT this year and that Suirtain last year. It makes less sense in LSU's case because they have been putting players in the league but you get my point either way. Alabama had a freaking 5* linebacker from Auburn with an Auburn tattoo on his arm flip to them. It happens. What we need is an actual good coach to get the most out of the players on our team, win some games with some consistency and start getting players drafted. Tennessee as a state is putting out more D1 players than ever before, we still have some success cherry picking some good Georgia, north and south carolina, virginia, west virginia etc. talent and thats good enough to get you there. If the SEC rant would have existed during the Dubose, Franchione and Shula years i doubt alot of people would have ever expected Alabama to be that great again. Alabama isnt cranking out D1 talent like Florida, Georgia or Texas either and they share it with another big name. To say its just over and cant happen seems a bit short sighted. Its all on coaching/recruiting and through our shitstorm of a last decade we have still managed to recruit pretty well consistently, just need a good coach.

You laugh Fiddle but what’s it say when you continue losing to South Carolina these days? I think it’s six of the last nine and three straight?

Welcome to our level.

Honestly, they need Vanderbuilt to fall a little bit first. It has to be embarrassing as Hell to lose to in-state nerds each year
