Damn that place was great, but I figured it wouldn't last long.

In Starkville I love Harveys, Mugshots and the Veranda. The Cake Box has great sweets.
I go to Tuscaloosa a lot and love Switzills (spelling) in Northport right under the bridge and adjacent to Dreamlands. Their bread pudding is amazing.

Meh....Wintzell`s is OK. I live 2 miles from the one in West Mobile. My question for Bama fans or Tuscaloosa residents is why doesn`t Kozys get more love from locals than it does? Kozys was THE place you took a date to impress her when I was in school in the 90s.. That place was awesome and gets amazing reviews from foodies but it never gets a mention from Bama fans when recommending places to eat. Is it because it`s so expensive or has it gone downhill in recent years?

Not many Baton Rouge gems representing here. When I was there, there was a little soul food joint, maybe called Half Moon Diner or something. Had great food but when we walked in it felt like the scene from Animal House.
Other spot for good eats we always loved was Shwabs (sp?). Seafood buffet with everything plus nickel droughs. In retrospect, the food wasnt all that good, but the quantity prevailed in those days.
Does anyone know if the Happy Note still exists? Little hole-in-the-wall bar way north of campus. Used to make the strongest mixed drinks known to man. They would fill the cup to the top with liquor then a small squirt of mixer. Unreal to get bombed on 2 mixed drinks.
Oh the simplicity of those days. Get stuffed and bombed for the lowest price available.

That mexican place behind Obys is beyond authentic. I've gone in there to buy peppers and spices before because they have the real stuff. Nobody has mentioned Emilghs in Taylor. They have odd hours, but the food is great.
Both of these

For Athens, just check out this article form garden & Gun. Pretty damn good take on the city in a not-too-long piece, and the second page lists some great restaurants and bars + descriptions worth checking out

when in athens you must hit up weaver d's. greatest soul food i have ever eaten. there is also cane's but from what i hear louisiana has some of those. only one in GA from what i have heard. clocked has a great burger as well. can't think of many other gems off the top of my head
I ate at some Japanese restaurant in Athens that was very good. I had the grilled swordfish. There was a burger joint called the Varsity I thought was pretty decent, but the service was terrible and the old black guy who waited on me was one of the rudest people I've ever encountered. BTW, Raising Canes is originally from Baton Rouge.

It's been mentioned.
True story: I was in line one Sunday around Noon to get a blue plate lunch at the big star right behind this hefty, hairy, grumpy lookin' motherfricker. He is ordering his food all curt-like, gettin' snappy. Like "I want some of the chicken spaghetti, aight?" He kept going on like this, saying things like "and don't scrimp on the corn nugges neither" and shite until, finally, whatever the hell was bothering him was enough. He grunted, turned, and walked away.
I was stunned. I looked at the lady behind the counter with that "what the fuuuuuuck" look on my face. She was amused. She told me that she cannot put the food back in the trays and that they throw stuff away, so she gave me his food + mine for the price of mine.
I grabbed one of those monstrous sweet teas and made an afternoon out of it. I had horrible diarrhea for like four days, but it was worth it.

THIS IS A HIDDEN GEMS THREAD. THE VARSITY IS NOT A HIDDEN GEM. IT IS LITERALLY THE MOST FAMOUS RESTAURANT FROM AN SEC TOWN.
If you list ANY of the following, then you're not doing it right:
The Chimes
City Grocery
Pancake Pantry
Dreamland's
The Varsity
Mugshots
Etc. Etc. Etc.

I remember the spot in Taylor opening up right before I moved away. It was well worth the drive out there. Fantastic soul food, creole food, and other types of Southern goodness.

Yes sirrr. For under $10 you can get a massive blue plate and drink. It's quick as hell and always fresh. I talked to a buddy who works there and he said they have been killing it since they moved to the Square.
They still have the one out in Plein-Air in Taylor but they only use it for banquets and whatnot. Great decision by them to move into town. Plus it's a 2 min walk from my place.
