On Monday, Mullen finally gave an example that shed some clarity as to why Richardson might need some more time to be ready for his moment as the Gators' starting QB.

Mullen gave one example quite plainly:

“An easy one would be if you go back a couple games he drops back, misses a protection check, then misses the hot throw, then misses the primary read, and then scrambles around and runs and everybody thinks, ‘What a spectacular play!’”

I think this is a really interesting story, because it shows how easily coaches can be fooled into not seeing the forest for the trees.
This is the same mentality that Saban has.

Sometimes a guy doesn't read everything right on every play. Sometimes a guy doesn't know the playook inside and out. etc. But yet, sometimes that guy is such a superior athlete in every way that it doesn't matter, and he still gives you the best chance to win.

There are so many coaches out there who would start Emory Jones over Richardson, including Saban, and yet, Emory Jones sucks, and Richardson looks like a goddamn Heisman candidate. It's something every casual fan can see plain as day, but the coaches can't see it because they just see the mistakes

Sounds like he didn't read damn near anything right...

Eventually, against the tougher teams on the schedule, that kind of stuff gets you beat. Look at when Auburn beat A&M in '13. Aggy had a chance to keep the final drive alive to possibly win the game and JFF tries to win the game by himself and takes two awful sacks that put the nail in the coffin.

I think it's more how fans are fooled. I would think most coaches at this level would know when a QB misses checks, etc. Well, except Coach O.

OP spends all his time telling the board how Saban screws up. CrimsonClown.

Your point about raw athletes is well-taken, but I don’t imagine you’re implying Johnny Manziel shouldn’t have been starting for A&M despite his limitations

No, absolutely not. I'm implyi g that trying to play backyard football outside of the offensive scheme, especially from a talented athletic QB. Because you eventually run into a defense that is equally athletic where a well executed gameplan is more valuable than an athlete that can't execute said gameplan. AKA: trying to do too much.

1. A.R. misses a read and gains 10 yds. on a qb scramble.

2. Emory holds onto the ball too long and throws 4 terrible int's vs USF and FAU.

I'll take option 1 all day everyday.

The bottom line is that a young 6'5" 250 lb dude who knows nothing about football is a better football player than Nick Saban at 70 years old.

Sometimes a difference in athleticism is more important than knowledge of the game.

and yet, in said situation, Richardson still gives you a better chance to win than Emory Jones, even if you just snapped it to him every play and said "do whatever"

I would as well. His reads will improve through live gameday experience. May take some lumps early on, but by end of the year he should be much better.

Hmm. If I’m not mistaken you were banned on the Alabama board. Not long after Army Tide shows up. Both of you apparently think Richardson is the best qb in the nation and both of you seem to dislike Saban. I smell an alter, or actually 2 alters, and it ain’t a for real Alabama fan

Well, that's just not true at all.

When a defense schemes to stop AR, and makes him prove he can win a game with his arm, then what happens? Granted I know he has no ints vs EJ 4. But he hasn't show to be as consistent throwing enough to win a game.

I think AR will eventually be a star in the SEC, but I think everyone needs to pump the brakes on him being a Heisman hopeful this year. He hasn't proven he can run like he has against good competition.

I always love when fans think that these coaches are starting players that give them less of a chance to win. Especially given that these coaches see what the fans don't get to see in practice and camps. Like do you really believe Mullen wouldn't play the guy that gives his team the best chance at running the offense efficiently and winning? If so, what would be the reason? He just wants to put himself on the hot seat for underperforming?

It's not that simple. Richardson starts believing in his scrambling ability and (a) stops listening to coaching - and they will need him later. Or (b) he gets cut in half by an angry linebacker or DL and a guy that had potential is ruined for the year because some idiot fan insists, "Yeah but he can run for 10!"

It's true. I got banned from the Alabama board, and then my alter ArmyTide got banned entirely because the fine folks at SEC Rant figured out that was my alter.
For some reason internet policy and censorship is decided by the biggest pussies on the internet.

JFF is the reason A&M beat Alabama in 2012.
He's the reason they lost to Alabama in 2013.

Not only can he run for 10. He can run for 72 and 80 yd td's.
He also threw the ball really well. 3/3 for a 152 yds. And 2 td's.

If you had watched UF's first two games it's obvious who the better qb is. I mean really obvious.

I think the main thing is this:

1. Scrambles for a 10 yard gain against the likes of FAU and South Florida.
2. Against some SEC defenses, gains about 2-3 yards before getting blasted.

I'm not saying he's slow - it's not just speed. Lanes are narrower, holes close quicker, and the players aren't just faster - they have more complex schemes because their coaches can teach them and their athleticism allows them to be in more places than slower guys can be.
