A public university can absolutely say "you shouldn't wear yellow and gold to our stadium."

If a public university tried to enforce that, it would be a legal issue.

Luckily, like every other SEC school, they yielded operations of sporting events to a private organization, typically a non-profit corp or LLC, who rents the space from the university. A private organization can make these decisions with expansive legal protection assuming they don't target a protected group.

Every high school in the country can have law enforcement enforce dress codes on both sides of the stadium.

A private organization cannot infringe on 1A for public property.
