Finally someone understands what’s going on here. It’s not about on the field results, it’s not about regional pride, it absolutely isn’t about the fans.

The consequences will be drastic changes to the game to draw in new consumers (not fans) who are 45 and under (that’s the only age group the bean counters care about, if you’re above that you’re irrelevant) and in more diverse demographics than the traditional college football fan base.

It's not so much the size of your brand, it's how many eyeballs your brand will bring to watch the pizza and beer commercials.

I dunno, a generation ago I would agree 100% on brands but now it is all being run by kids with short attentions, greed $$$, and self interest. 5 years is the new 25 years in the under 30 set. I hope I am wrong but I have the sad feeling I am not.

I understand what he means. Your response using foul language solidifies his point. Instead of asking questions or making lucid arguments , you resort to bashing. Why not ask what he means? RTR

Well yeah, that’s why they want schools that have a brand. No one cares about Washington State football for example.

And, relative to the SEC, there aren't many eyeballs watching PAC football.

Said it once and I'll say it again...relative to the SEC, the west coast doesn't give a shite about college football.

Don't believe me? Gee, if only there was a source where we could see some TV ratings from last year.

Numbers of viewers, 2021

Week 0:

Alcorn St-NC Central: 1,002,000
Hawaii-UCLA: 976,000

Who was saying UCLA was a top brand in college football??? What utter stupidity. You're not a top brand in college football when you can't draw 1,000,000 viewers on opening night and you get out drawn by Alcorn fricking State.

Week 1:

1. UGA-Clemson: 8,863,000
4. Ala-Miami: 5,674,000
6. LSU-UCLA: 3,219,000
8. LOU-Ole Miss: 3,078,000

Week 2:

1. Oregon-Ohio State: 7,730,000
2. Wash-Mich: 4,748,000
3. aTm-Colo: 4,502,000
5. Tex-Ark: 3,356,000
6. Pitt-Tenn: 1,739,000
7. Fla-USF: 1,597,000
8. Utah-BYU: 1,503,000
9. Stan-USC: 1,441,000
11: UGA-UAB: 1,118,000
14: NCSt-Miss St: 756,000

Week 3:

1. Ala-Fla: 7,863,000
2. Aub-PSU: 7,606,000
6. SCar-UGA: 2,548,000
11. USC-WSU: 1,583,000
12. AzSt-BYU: 1,498,000

Week 4:

3. aTm-Ark: 4,071,000
4. Tenn-Fla: 3,282,000
8. LSU-MissSt: 1,791,000
11. Ariz-Ore: 1,656,000
15: UK-SCar: 941,000
17: OreSt-USC: 754,000

Week 5:

1. Ole Miss-Ala: 4,792,000
4. Ark-UGA: 3,845,000
6. Aub-LSU: 3,791,000
7. Fla-UK: 3,063,000
8. Ore-Stan: 2,641,000
16. AzSt-UCLA: 673,000

Week 6:

1. Ala-aTm: 8,334,000
5. UGA-Aub: 4,581,000
8. Ark-Ole Miss: 2,230,000
9. Utah-USC: 1,376,000
So, with that whole Southern California TV market, almost a million more people watched teams from Mississippi and Arkansas???

I'm not going to type the rest. All of you can go see for yourselves. But to summarize, the rest of the season, the PAC only had 6 games crack the 2 million viewer mark, and two of those games involved Notre Dame. The highest viewership the rest of the season was Oregon-Utah at 4,818,000. Four SEC games the rest of the season drew more than that. USC-UCLA didn't even draw 2,000,000.

That's right...that hallowed rivalry between those two "powerhouses"...in the Southern California TV market...couldn't draw 2,000,000 viewers. You know who did draw 2,000,000 viewers though?

Auburn-South Carolina
Ole Miss-Mississippi State.
That's right...that monster Mississippi TV market outdrew Southern Caifornia.

Hell, Arkansas-Missouri drew 1,000,000 more viewers. Arkansas and fricking Mizzou.

In contrast, the rest of the season, 16 SEC games drew over 2,000,000. Twice as many.

Finally, the icing on the cake...championship games.

SEC: 15,277,000
B1G: 11,658,000
B12: 8,021,000
PAC: 4,247,000

Sure, you can make an argument that Alabama-Georgia had national appeal. But Baylor-OkieState? That game had almost double the viewers of the PAC championship.

The evidence is clear. Relative to the SEC...and relative to the size of their population...the west coast doesn't give a shite about college football. Putting USC-Rutgers and UCLA-Maryland on TV isn't going to change that.

Sure, but do you see their fanbases supporting them and showing up at Michigan in the winter if they aren't 9-0? And that's just football. Think of all the other sports this will impact. Imagine the jetlag fying from LA to play a series at Rutgers or wherever with little to no fans. I get ticket sales aren't the only thing, I understand the TV package, I just don't think this was a wise move. We'll see.

I sure as hell don't understand the logic of bringing in a team...with the Los Angeles TV market...that can't even out-draw Alcorn State on opening night.

The B1G is banking on their potential. If Riley gets USC back to winning, they'll be back in the stands and ESPN will be on it like white on rice. SC, Notre Dame and Ohio State are media darlings in football.

How for instance is even a middle class kid from Thousand Oaks, going to get out of class and drive or fly to Ann Arbor. They don’t travel well now!

You're kind of arguing against yourself here. If the point is about them not caring and not traveling well now, then what difference does it make where the game is?

Let's say these talks never happened and USC and UCLA were staying in the PAC. Riley shores up the O-line, gets a few bluechips on defense, they start putting together 10 and 11 win seasons again and look to be returning to the SC we knew under Pete Carroll. SC students and fans would be more likely to drive down to the game, or make a trip down to Tucson or Tempe and support the program. Instead, now if that happens and the program is on the upswing, those same fans and students will have to look at taking flights across the country to support them on the road. Unless it's a big time game, games between USC/UCLA and whatever B1G opponent will be 99% home fans in attendance.

If that happens, then the big money people will fly there anyway since it's the in thing to do.

Sure, sounds like a bunch of rough and rowdy fans. Maybe all 10 of them will get loud when it's 3rd and 12 and they're on the brink of losing at Purdue.

Not sure why the big10 wanted two schools from a state that doesn't care about college athletics.

Nobody is going to UCLA games and haven't for years. USC has a higher attendance at games but not much better.

Football is done on the Left Coast.

USC is stoked about this move to the Big 10. STOKED!

Remember this when it's November 12th and the Trojans travel to New Brunswick for a meaningless game against an 3-7 Rutgers team at 12:00 ET/ 09:00 a.m. PT. The majority of your games will be against nontraditional foes in far away time zones. If USC is such a big hitter they should have ousted the commissioner. Stay stoked!

UCLA and USC would both be better off with smaller stadiums like Oregon so the atmosphere can be good

SC football peaked with Pete. UCLA football peaked in the 60's. Like Michigan they are just a brand to far removed from being a power team. Like the Vols are getting to be, but the 90's may have been the last of them. Who would have guessed that in say 96'?

If USC gets back to being good again then none of this will matter. When their team is good they have an electric fan base. And the alumni of that school have an insane amount of money.
