Have wealthier whites been abandoning college football for a while now?

These discussions about a rebellion against college football’s wokeness and wokeness in sports in general has gotten me thinking. Have we not been seeing a withdrawal of upper class and middle upper class whites from college football for some time now? I say this as a graduate of Auburn and a private school in Mobile in the 90’s, just to give perspective. It seems to me that football is kind of looked down upon and seen as a hobby for the proles. I feel this is definitely the case for pro-football. There’s a lot of people that go out of their way to say they look down on football and are not associated with it in any way. However, among lower class whites, the game seems more popular than ever. It seems a decade or two ago, you’d see wealthier types hosting football parties and now I don’t see too much of that anymore. Just was curious if anyone had observed the same thing? I see white people not wanting their kids playing football anymore with the excuse of CTE, but I think the main culprit is that it’s seen as a sport for lower class whites and quite frankly...blacks. I’m just saying this as a neutral observer. I could be totally wrong in my observations and off base.

I think as far as participation - yes.
As far as attending and viewing - no.
Plenty of moneyed folk are happy to watch the gladiators compete

Not from what I’ve seen. Moving forward maybe so

It seems to be a regional issue too. I can't comment on class bias but I know the amount of kids playing in California, west coast and really the whole northeast has gone way down. Though there are exceptions.
FWIW up here the popularity among blacks is as high as ever but a lot of cities are becoming more and more hispanic and that's changing things. There are a lot of large public schools in NJ that used to produce D1 kids regularly. They now are .500 teams with depleted rosters, meanwhile their soccer programs are state powerhouses.
So it's really not only the wealthier white kids but also the hispanic kids not playing that's harming the game in a lot of these places. You never know though the Hispanics may come around. I know in Mexico the NFL is pretty popular.

If this is the case, then who is buying up all those expensive season tickets to the college games?
Yeah, I see it insofar as the NFL goes, but college football doesn't seem to be reflecting this - at least not in the south. The thing that is really starting to piss people off right now is that the SEC and NCAA are feeling their oats and trying to dictate policies and legislation that should only come from the legislature of the individual states or their voters/citizens.
A lot of us are fed up with the SEC and NCAA reactions to Mississippi's state flag. It's their flag, and it's their issue. We're also still pissed about the bullshite that sports entities tried to pull in North Carolina regarding the made up issue about restrooms for transgenders and other "non-binary" genders.
You may have a point though, on the whole, as more people become truly "woke" to the fact that we can live quite well without professional athletes who provide nothing but entertainment. And, as much as I love football, the universities are institutions of higher learning (although it's trending more toward indoctrination these days). Our respective Alma Maters could indeed survive without sports teams, but we would surely miss them.

BAMA effect?

That’s actually a good point. Bama has gained a lot of vocal fans the last 15 years or so. A lot of Bama alumni don’t want to be associated with that group. That might be what I’m seeing.

I've read your post 3 times now, and I have no clue if you're talking about participation in the sport itself, or in fandom.
If you're talking participation, yes there has been a decline in participation but I don't think it's limited to just wealthy white people.
If you're talking fandom, no I don't think wealthy whites have abandoned the sport. If anything, I think interest among the middle class has waned as ticket prices have drastically increased and family commitments in the fall have limited their time to commit to it.

Athletic specific donations will suffer because of this. Not many want to fund the next Kaepernick. His conduct and the conduct of current athletes comes off as very unappreciative of the opportunity to represent an University and get a quality education at the same time. Donors have been basically funding the NFL minor league and are waking up.
Black athletes and the NFL are literally biting the hands that feed them, IMO.

Seems it is the reverse. At LSU there is a higher percentage of wealthier fans in the seats now than in my childhood (1960s). Attending LSU Football is an expensive endeavor these days.

I won’t allow my sons to play, but I still pay to watch. If I ejected now I’d literally have to eject from the planet because there’s no sport or product or nation that isn’t being taken over by the SJW sociopaths. They are out here renaming syrup and protesting the founding fathers. We all know this leads to the constitution being a “racist” document as it was signed by racists who either owned slaves or were “Silent which is complying”. Just a matter of time.

Ok but this year is not last year. The past two months have changed a lot of peoples' minds on a lot of things. And we ain't done, yet.
Not to make this political, but times are a changing. Everyone is going to have to pick a side on our current path. I love BAMA football, attended my first game before I could walk, while my parents were students. But, I have other interests that can fill the void. Besides, bass and deer aren't political, racist, or attacking nor talk back. :)

I'd say it's the opposite. Compare college football fans vs. NFL fans and it's night vs. day.... Very white collar (college) vs. blue collar crowd (NFL) who attend the games.
For LSU at least, I feel like the crowd has continuously gotten more elite and it's where you socially go to be seen in the state, but the atmosphere has taken somewhat of a hit as a result.
Most fans who can afford to attend the games in person are very different than the sidewalk fans though. Bama is the perfect example of this.

I've never encountered any of these attitudes, but participation in mostly white areas is declining I'm pretty sure.

No
Even as our attendance took a nosedive post protest the luxury boxes were always full and have a multi year waiting list.

Yea, all these hundred million dollar stadium and facility improvements are paid for by the poors.

The potential for violence, on our current path, will keep even the most fanatic white fan away. And yes, at ground level this is a black and white issue, even though the real problem is right versus left. Blacks are just the pawns being exploited by liberals.

I've lost absolutely no desire to go to football games over the last 30 days because of this stuff. None at all. Literally hasn't changed the way I plan to enjoy going to games or watching them one bit.
