The ref should spot the ball first then look to see if its a first down. Not the other way.

Agree. However holding calls get missed as to spotting calls. But spotting calls don't get missed by:
1.) Shuffle your spotting foot forward.
2.) Look to see where the marker is.
3.) Shuffle your spotting foot forward again.
4.) And spot the TAIL of the ball at your toe.

I really hope the Alabama/LSU game comes down to a call by the refs

Having watched SEC football since 1961, an LSU season ticket holder & one who has traveled to all but 2 of the stadiums in the league, I don't the officiating in the SEC as having a "cheating" issue, tho there have been calls that do make one wonder. I just see gross ineptitude across the board that is inexplicable, especially in a league that has been basically printing its own money for the past few decades.

I bet you do. I'll spell out sarcasm next time, just for you.

Is that how they teach you to spot the ball, by rolling the ball over your foot? Haha, damn that ref looked shaky on that play.
But there would have to be more than that I would think to call it cheating. That was just being tentative.
Was there anything else or just that one isolated incident early in the game?

Did the refs help y'all out against Towson? I saw they were winning 9-7 at one point.

I think what I like most about this thread is that there are no ole miss fans in here

I am not sure what those pictures are supposed to prove, it looks pretty clear that his knee is down and the ball is well short of the first down marker and much closer to where the ref originally spotted the ball.
I am not sure I follow the shadow argument and what that has to do with someone's knee being on the ground.

<-----just want an explanation from the SEC on why this ONE PARTICULAR ref spotted the ball the way he did. I have never seen a ref spot a football the way he did on that particular play at any level (little league, high school, college, and pro) and I've been following this game religiously for 40 years.

Outcome not in doubt, did not cover. So, if there was, it didn't help.

LSU fans just take it to a completely different level complaining about a spot (which might not have even been a bad spot) in the first quarter of a game that LSU wasn't even involved in where the game was won fairly easy and the call had zero impact on the outcome.

Lots of stupidity in this thread.
Did it ever occur to you guys that what is missing in all of these photos and videos is any audio of instructions being given to the linesman from the other official? So no one really knows what, if any, instructions the linesman was following. Did it ever occur to anyone that the other official could have been correcting the spot and told the linesman where to spot the ball, using the front of the chains as a reference point?
It's just as silly, really, as using a photo from above to judge whether or not there's daylight between a player and the ground. What none of these conspiracy theorists have a clue about is the verbal communication between the officials.

For all the frick not given by Bama fans, there sure are a lot in here trying to defend the call!
They love their 12th man and will defend them to no end. I don't blame y'all, I would too.
Correctly or incorrectly spotted in the end, that was the most bizarre/suspect spotting of a football I've ever seen. Yeah, I've seen shitty spots over the last gazillion football games I've watched, but wtf was that official doing?

There was a call that went AGAINST Alabama that was way worse than what you see here.
Lester picks off Ole Miss, returns it about 20 yards then gets tackled out of bounds, fumbles and Ole Miss recovers in mid air. The ruling was Lester was out of bounds....so the ball is out of bounds = no fumble. The video evidence to overturn was NOT present. The play should have stood = Bama's ball......but, it was overturned.
Additionally, the Ole Miss player that forced the fumble was out of bounds at the time he touched the ball. This by rule, means the ball is out of bounds.....but it wasn't called.
Either way, the play should have been Bama's ball 1st and 10.

No shite. The outcome is totally irrelevant to how and why the ref spotted the ball on this particular play. Quit throwing out red herrings.

My purpose here is to fan the flames of Cryfest 2012. But you are probably right, no need for it.

Dear GumboPot,
We have received your request for an explanation on that ONE PARTICULAR spot. The best explanation we can provide to you is to frick off.
Sincerely yours,
