There's a wee bit of irony in this case, tho - in that a former QB and coach for a team ends up coaching a QB from his arch nemisis.

Doesn't irony have to be intentional? Not positive, just thought that was the case.

Miss his wife. She was no Layla, but still pretty hot nonetheless.

No, it doesn't. The definition of irony is cumbersome, but it's basically when the opposite logical / expected outcome occurs in a situation.

Lifeguard drowning (not on the job). Teetotaler getting liver cancer. Coach getting fired after undefeated season.

A teetotaler getting cirrhosis of the liver would probably be far more unlikely (and ironic) than getting liver cancer but your main point still stands.

Does Shula get any credit for Saban's NC?

He got two interviews - this is not serious consideration?

I remember it well. I think the correct term is "courtesy interview"...possibly with a smidge of PR manipulation thrown in.

Kind of like the ones the NAACP seems satisfied with whenever a Southern team is hiring..."you're not gonna get hired, but we're gonna go through these motions for our own reasons".

I've honestly not kept up with him since he went back to the NFL. There haven't been any stories mentioning his name and the University. I'm guessing feelings are still sore.

Nice catch.

I was thinking cirrhosis and typed cancer. Probably because "cirrhosis" is hard to spell.

How ironic.

(Or not).

Yep.....let's call it the "Shula Rule". The "serious consideration" was pretty similar to the consideration given to most black HC candidates under the "Rooney Rule" when everybody knows who the head coach is going to be no matter who is interviewed.

No, but to be fair he had nothing to do with Bama before he got hired(post-playing days).

LOL, Dolphins were ecstatic when Shula was no longer their OC. Pops left Balitmore in more insidious way (Unitas never forgave him).

Well the fact remains he was "courtesy interviewed" twice. Also rating two interviews were Cam Cameron, Jim Mora and Chan Gailey.

That sounds to me like he got serious consideration. Just not the job.

Could it have something to do with pop being in the front office?

I don't think senior worked after retiring - and he was off the job 10 years before this went down. I'm sure he held some influence with Huizenga, though.

I always wondered if Nick was still HC, would Pat Willis be there at Miami?
