He would be a non-traditional student (not going to college right out of high school), but he would be a younger non-traditional student.

Accruing military benefits and getting the late-teens / early-20s bad decisions out of the way will serve him well as an undergraduate. He'll most likely be able to finish in three years and go on to grad school or the job market.

He'll do fine.
