Because the rules were different then. Nowadays a lot of guys are scared to even hit someone too hard, legally, for fear of drawing a flag. I've seen it happen to UGA many times.

Honorable mention: Watch UT's blocked punt against UGA and sequential return for TD. Right as the guy is about the cross into the endzone, the punter (kinda attempting to make the tackle) gets DEMOLISHED. Reminds me of Aaron Murray vs. Bama gif.

I wish there was a GIF of that hit Michale Clayton laid on Rodrick Hood in 2001 after the Auburn tiger eye stomping and the Onside Kick return in 2001.
