False. If left to its own devices, the River would be gradually increasing the size of Louisiana
It’s the levees that restrict the natural course of the river and direct the flow of sediment off the continental shelf

The Ohio River begins in Pittsburgh at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. About 2/3 of the Ohio River is in Kentucky including where the winning Tennessee River reaches its confluence.

It certainly is. Whenever the Mississippi finds just a tiny soft spot where the path to the gulf is slightly less elevated all of the efforts of man will be meaningless. We can fight it but there is no way the Mississippi will remain bent to man's will forever...nor will any river for that matter. The Mississippi has 2 luxuries unknown to man and that is time and patience.

There is a fascinating account of the 1927 flood, "Rising Tide" that may be of interest to anyone who hasn't read it. The Mississippi may be controlled for a short period of time but it will do what its going to do eventually.
A truly fascinating part of the book is the part about the river basically being a mud slide. Apparently the majority of the river bed depth is truly unknown...what is measured is the point where the sediment is thick enough to support a weight or bounce back a sonar signal...but that sediment is steadily flowing to the gulf...and always has been and is today.
