With 75% of the season done, I think Mertz has performed admirably. While he doesn't have the big play ability with his feet like Richardson, I think he has played better at QB.

Passing:
Richardson 114 Comp, 207 Att, 55%, 16,38 Yds, 7 TD, 7 Int
Mertz 195 Comp, 257 Att, 76%, 2,127 Yds, 14 TD, 2 Int

Rushing:
Richardson 67 Att, 414 Yds, 6 TD, 2 Fum
Mertz 46 Att, -91 Yds, 3 TD, 2 Fum

Total:
Richardson 274 Att, 2,052 Yds, 13 TD, 9 TO's
Mertz 241 Att, 2,036 Yds, 17 TD, 4 TO's

Also Mertz has done this behind a much worse OL imo.

Granted the whole thing can fall apart for Mertz in the next 4 games, so we will look at it again at the end of the season.

While Mertz has been decent, Richardson was bad last year, so these numbers don't tell me much.

Him being a high draft pick has caused people to forget that.

There were lots of people who said the UF offense would be worse this year without Richardson. This thread is pointing out what a waste at QB Richardson was with a pretty good offensive line. Especially considering his physical skills.

It doesn't matter how athletic you are, if you're playing QB and aren't good at throwing the ball you're going to be limited.

False. Lots of people said the UF offense would be worse after seeing the spring game.

I feel like most were astonished that Richardson was drafted that high.

After watching Mertz at Wisconsin, I would have thought floridas offense would have gotten worse. Mertz was just another ball control qb at wisconsin. He's already having a better year at florida than he had at any year at wisconsin.

I think he has kind of surprised everyone.

It doesn’t surprise me that Richardson is already out for the season with injury. Even though he is a big guy, he has always been prone to niggling injuries, and allowed his play to be affected by them in college.

I'm guess that Mertz has been exactly what the Florida coaches hoped he'd be. The definition of a very good game manager. Consistently make the easy throws, continue to get better at making bigger throws down the field. However, not gonna win the game for you by himself.

Does he have another year?

He does. And I agree.

Also, the kind of offense BN wants to run requires a high completion pct, which Richardson was never going to have. Mertz has been really good at that. Just wish we could have a better OL in front of him.

Should be a pretty good group next year with him back plus Etienne and Wilson.

Ah, I see where you're coming from.

I have been surprised by Mertz. I thought he'd be flat out awful given his numbers at Wisconsin. Really just shows how shitty and unimaginative B1G offenses are. Every single B1G West offense is in the bottom 10 of power 5 offenses for scoring offense

I think so. We have nearly the whole 2 deep coming back on the OL as well.

I hope the Mertz comes back, I said from the start that the QB position would be better this year and it is. Next year he would have a more experienced line and receivers with solid running backs. Just because you can jump high, run fast and throw the ball 80 yards doesn't make you a great QB. Colts are finding that out.
