Great article on what Texas & OU are facing in the possible years ahead before they transition to the SEC.

Big 12 opponents -- AND REFEREES -- are going to make things pretty bad for the 'Horns and Sooners before they begin to compete in the SEC.

What happened to Arkansas and what they faced when they announced they were leaving the old SWC and coming into the SEC should serve as a warning to the Burnt Orange & White and Crimson & Cream.

It ain't pretty... "Good luck Texas and Oklahoma" (you'll need it!)

It was well worth it to leave the SWC.

What makes this great is the author conveniently forgot all about A&M and Mizzou:

quote:

Arkansas' experience three decades ago -- as well as a handful of others since -- could be a preview of what Texas and Oklahoma can expect.

In the recent history of college football realignment, Arkansas' move is probably the closest comparison to the Big 12's predicament, leaving a football-driven conference that was already facing questions about its future viability.

But this guy ain't wrong:
quote:

"We brought them in [to join the former Big Eight] and they've been chaos with other schools," said Joel Farley of Okoboji, Iowa. "I think we would still probably have an A&M in the conference, we would still have a Missouri, we would have a Colorado and even a Nebraska. We're like, 'Man, we just took everybody else's problem.'"

They aren't going to lose their recruiting in the state of Texas like pig did.

When Arkansas left the SWC, they stopped playing Texas and A&M in the 90s except for bowl games. When that happened, Arkansas lost ground in Texas quickly and Arkansas had to recruit in different states where they didn't have any history of doing so.

This was back before all access on tv and the internet. No exposure means no recruits committing or visiting.

Not really.

I think A&M would've still jumped at the chance to join the SEC but Mizzou, Colorado and Nebraska might well have stayed put had not for Texas stirring all the shite they did.

I think there's a small possibility that Nebraska and Mizzou could well come back some day but not anytime soon. Things are far too uncertain in the near term with the playoff and future of conferences in general. But never say never. Who knows what TV contracts will be like in the future with everything moving towards a la carte streaming.

And while the SEC is celebrating now, it remains to be seen how the scheduling & divisions are going to work out with two more teams.

When the Hogs left the SWC there were a lot of pissed off people, the quality of the league was being diminished, a void being created that ultimately would see the SWC fail.

What's happening today is very different. The fans and Big 12 in general are going to be celebrating getting rid of Texas, it actually gives them a chance to rebuild the conference and be competitive again. All they need to do is back fill with teams of similar caliber like UCF.

Agree.

but Mizzou, Colorado and Nebraska might well have stayed

No, all 3 had dreams of the B1G, but only one of them made it.

What shite? Please explain.

If soon is as never, then yes. No way they or any school would leave behind $60+ plus million for the scraps being offered by the new Big 12. No one has jumped conferences yet for a pay cut.

Oh, I definitely agree that Mizzou's real prize was the B1G and they got spurned and settled for the SEC.

You can play dumb all you want.

I'm just saying who knows. It's certainly all about the money but there are other reasons Mizzou and Nebraska might well be happier staying closer to home.

It's hard to forecast how things will be in 20-30 years. I think everyone assumes superconferences will dominate but I think what is now the Group of 5 will eventually break into the playoff with at least one guaranteed spot and that may be the crack in the dam that gets us to more and more teams getting in. Pair that with a changing TV landscape and perhaps conferences won't be the end-all be-all that they are now. It's also not a given that all these schools will be forever be happy in a 16 team superconference.

The SEC has worked as long as it has because there has been enough balance. I'm sure all of this will fall on deaf ears in Austin.
