Last 4 years of recruiting rankings for UGA:

16: 8th (3rd in the SEC)
15: 5th (2nd in the SEC)
14: 8th (6th in the SEC)
13: 12th (7th in the SEC)

Currently we are 3rd, 2nd in the SEC. So yes, this would be different than "normal". The only other time in the last 4 year recruiting cycle we've done comparable to this year was teh '15 class, many of which are playing big roles for us currently. Obviously our '16 class is showing out as well.

The problem with our inflated recruiting rankings is that we may finish 7th or so one year but then finish 7th in the SEC the next. You aren't going to get head and shoulders better than your schedule, talent wise, without putting 3 or 4 elite classes together in a row. All indications are that's exactly what we're about to start doing.

Exactly. If you look at the trend of SEC East teams, Tennessee and Florida were consistently recruiting better than Georgia, either one, the other, or both. Now neither is recruiting better, and neither of those teams have the underclassmen that UGA has coming up, especially on offense.

Isn't this the same thing said about UGA every year?

I think people misunderstand why Kirby Smart was the choice. He wasn't hired to be some gameday genius. He was very much hired to upgrade UGA's recruiting. Time will tell if it works.

Their recruiting had consistently been top 10 and even then they've never controlled the east

Top 10 recruiting doesn't cut it when the best teams in the SEC have top 5 recruiting and you are weak where it counts most in the trenches. Richt was always good at recruiting skill players; not so much at recruiting top linemen, LB and defensive backs. I would add that our WR are also too small and don't make up for their size with uncommon speed and athleticism. Heck are most dynamic playmaker is McKenzie who is 5'8" 170lb. and drops about as many passes as he catches. I hold my breath every time he gets hit carry the football.

You should be worried that a supposedly great defensive coach's defense gave up 14 in the 4th quarter to end the regular season.

I'd be a little more worried if my defensive genius just allowed 50+ points at will to any team.

Talent differential is obvious. You also weren't playing a playoff team.

So Chaney and Kirby are going to develop all that offensive talent

I'll take my chances with more talented players vs. other teams' less talented ones.

So what the OP is saying is they're taking Tennessee's preseason title next year?

I expect our DL to really be improved next year, don't see much drop off if any at other defensive positions. OL and WR are worrisome and will depend on new contributors next year.

Maybe, the East is still in flux.

Should be wide open next year.

Jim Chaney is their OC, they'll win nothing of significance until a change is made there.
