Judging by recruiting rankings for the past four classes:
2017: Currently #3
2016: #8
2015: #5
2014: #8
Florida is continuing to trend down, and Georgia has 5 stars everywhere that are up-and-coming sophomores, freshmen, and juniors.
Their current depth chart:
Barely any seniors at all on defense. Obviously three oline spots on offense could be worrisome, but Georgia fans can tell me how they feel about their Oline next year.
Other than that, their skill players are off the charts next year.
5 star QB Eason
5 star TE Nauta
5 star RB Michel
5 star ATH/WR Goodwin
5 star ATH/WR Hardman
4 star WR McKenzie (if he doesn't declare, I have no idea)
4 star WR Riley Ridley
On defense this year they're likely bringing in two freshmen 5 star at Safety with Lecounte and Gibbs. They still have 5 star DT Thompson, 5 star DE Lorenzo Carter (if he doesn't declare), 4 star LBers at every position, and possibly adding Solomon, a high 4 star, as well to the Dline.
Just saying, if Georgia can rebuild their offensive line next year, and hire a new OC, their offense could get scary good, and their defense will have enough talent under Smart to succeed.

Doesn't matter, Kirby can't coach offense.

If most of the team returns, they should be very good on defense. I don't see them taking over the East though.

Is this really that different than other Big 6 recruiting that still can't break through and challenge Alabama?
Or, is it really that different than UGA in the past?

Their recruiting had consistently been top 10 and even then they've never controlled the east

Please stop with the preseason hype and expectations
My soul can't handle it anymore

We always look good on paper. Putting it on the field is a different story. Being a UGA fan is tiring.

When has Georgia not recruited well
And how many times had that translated to them dominating the east

Correct, under Richt we typically recruited around a top ~10 class...but were always 4th or 5th in the league. "Top 10" doesnt' mean shite when 3 or 4 above you are all on your schedule.
This year we will probably finish with the 2nd best class in the league (and by FAR the best class in the east), to go along with our extremely strong freshman class last year. A year or 2 more of that is unprecedented here so yeah, I'd say this is a bit different.

It's different because if Georgia can somehow learn to coach a decent offense, they have the players to run a Georgia 2012 type of team. This is different than the SEC as a whole, which generally has shitty as frick QBs, or QBs in systems with shitty players, or QBs that are good but on teams with no defense (Arkansas and Ole Miss).
What I'm saying is, Georgia has the potential to have a balanced roster. A true balanced roster, which isn't happening in the SEC right now outside Bama.
Look at Florida, LSU, Auburn. They all have shitty QB play, awesome defensive play. Auburn has no QB, LSU has no hope of a decent QB, and Florida has tried about 5 QBs in the past two years.

Well I'd be worried if Kirby tried to coach the offense so let's call that a W.

Finishing second in the SEC this year in recruiting would be different. We tend to finish in the 4-6 range. Hopefully, a few classes like this years will make a difference. Plus, we're putting an actual emphasis on OL/DL where as Richt focused on the skill guys thinking they could make up for the lack of big uglies.

to run a Georgia 2012 type of team with an actual QB at the helm
guess I didn't get the memo that an upperclassman Aaron Murray wasn't an actual QB

You should be worried that a supposedly great defensive coach's defense gave up 14 in the 4th quarter to end the regular season.

Sentence was confusing. I was saying Georgia has the ability to run a team like 2012 Georgia again. Both teams have competent QBs.

Your defensive coach just gave up 56. Pipe down

As it stands now, this class is expected to be rated higher than any class Richt ever recruited.
