Does he stay, go, take over the job next year, play the DJ Shockley role until he's a junior?

Who knows at this point. I think him and Fromm will duke it out this Spring, but if you watched Fromm the later half of the season he was legit one of the best QB's in the nation.

Fields has his work cut out for him moving forward, but I think we are all hopeful he gives it one more year before making a decision to leave.

Best case is he sticks around, Fromm goes pro next year and we get 1-2 years of Fields

Yep - I just dont see a path forward for Fields at UGA unless he's content to wait for Fromm to leave early.

There are worse problems to have than 2 capable QBs.

I ended up running right past his family's house yesterday afternoon. Debated going back and leaving a hot laptop outside his bedroom window and calling Gus.

He’s content waiting to his junior year. I mean if he transferred he would have to sit until his junior year anyway. Might as well stay at UGA where you can play all season, have a chance to win a National Championship, and will be playing behind an amazing line when you do finally start

He would be silly to leave so quickly. Hopefully he stays around and starts in 2020.

No, Fields isn't going to sit for two more years. If Fromm leaves after next year, he'll be the starter for his two remaining years. There is no guarantee Fromm leaves afer next season. It wouldn't surprise me if he transfers this year.

There are pros and cons to both decisions. He isn't going to be a starter at UGA until Fromm leaves, no matter how good he is. He was wasted this season and would have been better off with a redshirt.

I think it’s a safe bet that Fields stays. Fromm could leave after the 2019 season and Fields could step in. If Fields doesn’t have the job by the spring of 2020, he’s gone. His sister is enrolling at UGA and playing softball so the family angles helps.

Gut feeling? I think he stays, but in reality I have no idea. I would love to see him improve and be able to take over the job, because that would mean he is better than Fromm and we would be in great shape.

However, if he does not beat Fromm out , I am very happy with him, too, so it is a win/win as far as I am concerned.

You and I both know Fromm is the starter as long as he is at UGA, even if Fields proves to be better. There is no way Fields can beat out Fromm. We already know Fields is physically better than Fromm. However, Fromm is better at everything else, from knowing the offensive, to pre-snap reads, to going through progressions. That's why Fields should have redshirted. Smart has his starting QB for now and there was never a legitimate QB competition. The problem is we don't know how good Fields is at that because Smart stupidly continues to use him as the one play wildcat QB who is never allowed to pass except against cupcakes.

Fromm was legit the last half of the season and watching him live last Saturday was impressive. I honestly was confused by the use of Fields, not counti the fake punt. That play will never be forgotten!! To me, the sporadic use and at odd times as well, seemed to throw off the rhythm of the offense. A zone read keep for 2 yards or no gain and then 2nd & long with Fromm rotating back in didn't seem logical.
Has that been the formula for using him all year?

Fromm is projected Top 5 pick in next years draft. He’s gone after this year.

Fields would sit just as long if he transfers.

He stays and plays his junior year.

Fields only play a total of three or four plays and didn't play at all in the fourth quarter that I remember, not counting the fake. I'm not sure that is enough to throw off any rhythm, and Fromm didn't seem affected by it.

To answer your question, yes. The coaches have wasted Fields this year by using him as the one play at a time wildcat QB in short yardage and goal line situations.

I never argued any differently. What I argued was Fields should play more, should be given an opportunity to throw the football and be given a legitimate shot to win the position. We all know there was never a legitimate QB competition. That is nothing more than coach speak.

Everyone knows From is better at knowing the offense and pre-snap stuff. I thought this was common knowledge.

While I could see Fromm leaving early for the NFL, I'm not sure that's a given. He strikes me more as a 4-year guy, kinda in the mold of Murray and Greene...

They had no choice as neither were first round talents.
