The dumbest argument in the world is that a white person using the word is no different than a black person using the word. Anyone who makes that argument with a straight face is either mentally handicapped or a racist in their own right.

No. Not even close. If you’ve listened to any gangsta rap or hip hop over the last 30 years, the word is used ad nauseum. If you realize that whites are the majority of people who bought CDs or cassette tapes in the 1980s you would know that young people of any color are impressionable. Of course white and Asian kids use the word, because the influence of pop culture raises many kids

No it isn’t. A variation is used often, and it has far less negative connotations associated with it. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Yes it is. If you have listening capabilities, the variation has very severe negative connotations. If you believe it’s used as a compliment all the time amongst certain circles, you are out of touch.

You literally want me to list rap lyrics in which artists are graphically talking about shooting that n***a in the head, n***az killing n***az they don’t understand, it’s the master plan, and just crumblin’ herb. It’s a common slang word in the inner cities, and because it’s been normalized over the years, it’s gone mainstream. And let’s say very diverse communities use the word in derogatory fashion and a term of appreciation. But mainly, it’s got a negative overtone even in the older generation of the black community.

"they get to use the word so why cant we?!?!" is a very great and logical argument to use

So is it okay for white folks to use this "variation" you speak of? Asking for a friend.

Why are y’all so concerned about saying that word? It’s one word. It’s not hard to not say it.

If his name was Sassa vs Sasser he'd be okay right?

I wonder if you feel the same about the R word. I have no desire to use the N word, but it is asinine to pretend that it is ok for one group to use it and not of for others to use it if it is so frequently heard in today's sorry excuse for music.

Remember that UA sorority girl who got expelled for texting something that autocorrected to the soft variation of the n word? She had Black sisters in her sorority so it made no sense to think that she intentionally wrote the soft variant of the n word instead of the sorority term, "ninja," which means a girl who is admitted into, but not really wanted by a sorority.

The fact that she had used the soft variant of the n word in the past, and thus the auto-correct, was literally used to expel her. Anyone who thinks the soft variant is just as bad as the hard one, is just not being honest. Whenever I have heard the n word used in a hateful way, it wasn't the soft variant I heard expressed.

I’m uncomfortable with any variation of the N word. The only people I hear say it are either ghetto or red neck & far too ignorant for me to deal with.

Shocker. This whole site is full of a-holes who get super defensive about their racism. Post a negative reaction to someone's out-and-out racism and watch the downvotes flow in.

I guess so. Some of the arguments border on idiocy. I guess they want their racism without consequences. The fact that they're attacking the girl who outed this a$$hat is quite pathetic. Funny thing is Sasser admitted it, apologized, and agreed that the university had to can him. Shocking that he of all people has more class and dignity than some of the low class idiots here.

Yes, yes.

Saying "Hey honkey, you might want to refrain from using that word or else you might be publicly shamed for years to come like Michael Richards was" is totally the same as "Hey n****, if you use that water fountain you're going to jail and we'll sick the firehoses and dogs on your arse."

Totes the same, bro.

You nailed it.
