Ohio State earned that title the right way - and I could care less about them, but they ran the gauntlet and won. Losing some regular season games helped them win a Natty.
BCS from 1998-2013 produced the most exciting post-seasons/bowl games -
all the 12 team CFP has done is amplify opt-outs and destroy a regular season where EVERY weekend mattered - the best teams don't need 'mulligans' -

IMO the playoff was great, even the early round games. It does need some tweaking to make it a better product.
No auto bids, use the BCS formula to rank them,

Why the hell would any actual college football fan not prefer 7 playoff games instead of one?
Because we prefer 13 weeks of important games over basically 0

this makes negative sense to me ghostrider. EVERY game matters now. look at ole miss. they got bagged by florida and bumped. pre-playoff who cares because they were 2 loss and out anyways

The 4 team playoff, with BCS ranking system would be the best case scenario. 12 teams is retarded. I always watched the NC game until this year. I just completely lost interest by the time it aired. A 4 team playoff was still special. Teams ranked 1-3 always belonged, but after that, usually the 1 seed beat the dogshit out of the 4 seed. This 12 team format allows at least 6 teams that don’t belong, into the playoffs. It’s cool to be in the playoffs, but not at the cost of watering down the whole thing.

Reply not directed at OP or anyone for that matter.
The sooner we all understand that money will forever drive change, the sooner we accept it.
It isn’t supposed to be equitable, it is supposed to make money. More playoff games is just that. The SEC dominated the smaller formats, now it’s more open. Not because the PTB want it to be fair, but another all SEC final isn’t going to make as much if more people like this year are interested.
Not sure if I’m a boomer, but it’s about profit and that’s all. Tradition is great and all but shite changes. Suck it up buttercups.

I do. College football should not be played this late into the month of January. The season should end on New Year's Day.
But, why?
How is football being played this late in January affecting your life?

They deserve to be out losing to Kentucky and lsu

Which of Auburn's 2004 regular season games mattered?

do people legitimately think having two teams one game for a natty was better than a 4 or 12 team playoff?
Yes.
Does it not bother you at all that all the biggest games of the regular season were meaningless? Ohio State-Oregon, Penn State-Ohio State, UGA-Texas both times all had no impact.
It wouldn’t bother me so much if the playoffs were on campus and on fall Saturdays, but this system has destroyed the biggest fall games on campus in favor of midweek games in January at NFL stadiums.
Playoffs just assign arbitrary meaning to games late in the year, and I don’t find an extremely talented team piddling around for most of the season getting rewarded with a championship the least bit compelling.

I hate the playoffs, even the 4 team. Make the regular season matter again. The fact that we had 3 loss teams crying about being “left out” says it all.

I’d argue all of them because it still meant they had bragging rights over those opponents for the next year which is how people consumed college football at the time.
That’s materially different than Oregon beating Ohio State only for Ohio State to embarrass them two months later.

Needs some tweaks but I like it. Infinitely more entertaining than meaningless bowls.

Were postseason rematches ok in 1996 for Florida/fsu and 2011 Bama/Lsu? The regular season games for those teams for example didn't seem to matter very much, it was the postseason revenge games that mattered.

For most of CFB history, there were only 1-2 teams with a LEGIT claim to the title

Tigers beat a team ranked #10 and then #15 - twice - unlike the 12 team invitational winner of 2025 that went 1-1 against the team it had to play twice -
but their most important game was probably beating ULM 31-0 to open the season because if they'd lost it as some teams did this year to say a Northern Illinois or Michigan type team at home - they wouldn't have even had a chance to finish undefeated -

I thought the 12 team playoff was a great idea. Then I saw the 12 team playoff in action. It was a boring display of football where the fourth best team in their conference won the championship. I think four teams is the correct number. The regular season should count for something.

How was Ohio State the forth best team in the conference when they beat every single one of Oregon, Indiana, and Penn State? Are you seriously trying to argue any one of those teams had a better roster than Ohio State? Indiana was a better team than Ohio State?? You cannot be serious. Let's go over their rosters and let me know exactly how Indiana is the better team.
